Yellow Point Lodge 08.11.2020

Update! The private and cliff side Pyladies cabin has just come available for two nights, starting on November 4th. It isn't re-bookable for next year, but might make a nice getaway for a couple of chilly autumn evenings.

More blatant ads! Just to let you know, we have just updated the 'vacancy page sticky note button' on 'yellowpointlodge.com' to let people know that we have a few openings coming up for the last part of October and early November. A couple of the 'forest view' lodge rooms are 're-bookable' meaning you could put your name down for next year, if you want to be a regular, or find a new time of year to visit. Most of the other one's (including the private, cliff side 'DeCourcey' ...cabin) are for this year only, since the regular people can't make it this year..... for some reason. There are four rooms open on the 1st of November, so if you or any of your friends have been thinking about paying us a visit, please call (250) 245 - 7422 and we'll do our very best to look after you during these crazy times. I can't guarantee apple pie, but whatever we make will be the best it can be and made with love. See more

This might look like another shameless foray into branding and marketing, but the truth of the matter is that when Colleen produced this magical batch of delicious apple pies she put the initials 'YPL' on the top crust so everybody would know that all the apples in said pies came from the very property where you take walks and enjoy the scenery. I can speak from experience that she is a very gifted and talented baker. I took some home, slid a little slice of aged cheddar und...er the above mentioned top crust, drizzled a little Xtabentum (Mayan liquor, honey and anise, look it up!) on top, gave it a little warm up and it was fantastic! For a couple of minutes, all I was thinking about was pie! We'll offer up as much of this local and homemade fare as we can, so if you deserve a break, and who doesn't, these days? Give us a call at (250) 245-7422 or visit 'yellowpointlodge.com' and we'll see if we can have you thinking happy thoughts about food, at least for a minute, as well! See more

Ultra Last Minute Opportunity! Due to a couple of people not feeling well and being responsible about the treatment of their fellow citizens, we have just received two cancellations for this very weekend, yes, starting today, for three nights. There are probably not too many people who would be able to take advantage of this, but we should at least let you know. So, if you live nearby, like the fall colours and are tired of cooking, please call (250) 245 - 7422 and we can start looking after you really soon!

Public Service Announcement: (...for us, ie: an 'ad') The reason for the picture of the Barracks is that they would normally be closing next week, if they weren't already closed due to 'you know what'. This means that if we have other rooms that aren't full, (for the same reason), we don't have 20 people waiting at home that would normally be in the Barracks to call, because we know they're usually on vacation (here) at the same time. So as the season progresses, we find ours...elves moving into a period of having perhaps more availability. If you've ever wanted to visit, or need a break from the big city, due to 'you know what', now might be a good time. At the moment we have a few vacancies in October coming up in what we call 'forest view' lodge rooms, hence the photo of the back of the lodge, but you can actually see most of the last picture from the windows, (if you look to the left). So the era of 'you can't get in here' may be wrapping up as our rustic accommodations close for the season. If any of this interests you at all (we do all the cooking) please have a look at the 'yellow sticky note' button at yellowpointlodge.com or give us a call at (250) 245 - 7422. To our regular guests, please tell your friends, thanks! See more

This might be a bit of an 'inside joke' for people who are regularly here for dinner, especially on weekends. As you may know, one of the 'covid' changes means that we're not using the paper placemats anymore, therefore you don't have anything to make paper airplanes out of to launch around the dining room after dinner....unless you're Ruth and Dave! Ruth made little tiny ones out of the paper wrap bands from the cutlery and napkin. Doug and Lystra seem to have adopted 'stealth technology' with theirs and used the black part of the wrapper. I once heard someone say "the more things change, the more they stay the same" and with the help of our valued patrons, this seems to be the case. Thanks to these fine and regular guests for maintaining tradition!

Well, the Fall weather has cooled things off a bit, but we didn't think it was cold enough for Mama Deer to want to come inside. She and her little ones have been frequenting the front of the lodge lately, chomping on the acorns dropped by the big Gary Oak out front. I'm not sure who was more startled, her or me. Anyway, she tidied up the planter out front without doing much damage, so 'welcome the wandering stranger'. I guess that's what we're supposed to do here.

Have a look at these photos, because it looks like a little change is in the air as far as the weather goes for the next little while. Not only was it a lovely, smoke free day and evening in our little piece of the Gulf Islands but in the daytime photo our very courteous and thoughtful guests have even taken measuring sticks with them so they can be sure to stay six feet apart. We hope everybody made it through the smoky times and the change in the weather will bring a little relief to our friends who fight the fires and not too much wind, since our wood supply is in good shape these days. Cheers to you all and we'll hopefully see you soon.

Business as usual: Tara has been shopping the neighbourhood for fresh fruits and vegetables for your meals. She's found some local apples, corn from McNabs, up the road, beets and romaine lettuce from some of our other friends and sometimes we can get ahold of a supply of Shupe farms, 'big as your head' blackberries. The delicious local vegetables will end up in your lunch or dinner, and we let Tara's sister, Colleen turn the fruit into magical homemade pies! We try to source everything we can as locally as possible, including our eggs, honey and turkeys. It's good for the neighbourhood, good for the kitchen and hopefully fun for you! Thanks to everyone on Tara's crew for all the care and attention.

There it is! It's back! That is the Sun for sure! So, I'm back to my 'public service announcements'... which means advertising. Due to the imported smoke we've been enjoying for the last few days, a number of people have decided that it is not in their best interest to travel, which is probably wise in the case of people with any kind of respiratory problem. That means that we have a few last minute vacancies that you could take advantage of if you could use a couple of days away with somebody else doing all the cooking and cleaning up. As mentioned in a previous post, there is no extra charge for all the extra privacy and enhanced relaxation that we can feature, these days. Operators are standing by, please call (250) 245 - 7422 now, and we'll hope to see you soon!

Fall Special! When the glass being half empty can actually be a good thing, Yellow Point Lodge is offering enhanced relaxation opportunities and our new 'double your privacy' guarantee... But wait, that's not all! We are also the only semi-rustic, all inclusive, family operated waterfront lodge and cabin resort on East-central Vancouver Island to offer our guests exclusive use of 3.8 acres per person! You can enjoy the company of some of your fellow guests if you'd like, or ...select the 3.8 acres of your choice and have them all to yourself! Just sit and relax or feel free to walk around without having to have your arms outstretched for distancing. See if you can spot the people in the photos! As Summer winds down, we are not exactly sure what will be happening with our occupancy and booking availability, so as the situation changes, we'll let you know when it is time to check the 'vacancy page' (click on the 'post-it' note) on our website for possible opportunities if you'd care to visit us, and enjoy some open space. Remember, having the glass half empty is a good thing, if you're in a water drinking contest. See more

This is usually a feature that goes in our staff newsletter, but I wanted to share it with all of you. We call it 'Holding the Brain' and you get the honour of being pictured with it after using yours and coming up with an idea that benefits the guests, staff, lodge, world or any combination of the four. Early on in the covid nonsense, the head of our kitchen department, Tara, thought it would be a good idea to have a daily meeting with all staff people who wanted to attend s...o they could figure things out on the fly as the situation progressed and deteriorated. They were even more important after we re-opened, when we all had to adapt and figure out the best way to help each other provide the safest hospitality we could. Even though the urgency has subsided a lot, we still have the meetings and it's good to see everybody having input, sharing ideas and coming up with stuff I wouldn't have thought of. Tara, for this progressive idea that can only be called 'best practices' you are Holding the Brain! See more
