The Problem with Medication Overuse It’s said that moderation is the key to a long and happy life. A little salt can enhance the taste of foods but too much can ruin a meal and raise your blood pressure. Similarly, overuse of medication can lead to some serious negative effects. When I speak about overuse, I am not talking about taking excess of medication in large doses acutely- that would be an overdose and that’s a topic to save for another day. Rather, I’m talking about t...aking medication frequently over periods of weeks or months often in doses that are considered within a normal range. In some cases, a person can experience a rebound effect or rebound phenomenon. This is a condition where the symptoms can emerge or re-emerge when a medication is stopped and often are worse than the original symptoms. A good example of this occurs when we use topical nasal decongestants (Dristan, Otrivin, etc.). These sprays are effective at clearing up stuffy noses and helping us breathe better. They should only be used for short periods of time (less than 5 days) or it can lead to rebound congestion where a person becomes severely stuffed up and the medication no longer works. Another more serious example is Medication Overuse Headache. (MOH) Headaches can be debilitating and when they occur, people seek relief. As headaches increase and medication use increases, a vicious cycle can follow where headaches are frequent and caused by the medication. Commonly, Medication Overuse Headaches are seen when headaches increase with escalating medication; morning headaches reflecting withdrawal, and a predictable headache when medication is reduced or withdrawn. Certain medications such as narcotics can quickly lead to headaches even when used for other conditions. Over the counter medications containing caffeine and codeine can be particularly problematic and their use should be discouraged as they can lead to MOH. The best treatment for any medication overuse condition is removal of the offending agent. This can lead to discomfort and in many instances may require intervention from a health care professional to ease the symptoms. The best solution, like many conditions, is to avoid behaviours that would put a person at risk. Follow the directions. Take only when needed and take care of yourselves and each other. -Steve Bond, Pharmacy Manager
