Today we are a sharing a *free* digital conference for municipalities and individuals interested in climate change resiliency. The Livable Cities Forum is being offered by ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability) from Nov. 30th through Dec. 2nd. "COVID-19 has upended life across Canada, and around the world. More than ever, the well-being of Canada’s communities both urban and rural will be completely dependent on their resilience: their capacity to anticipate, adapt and respond to challenges posed by sudden shocks and chronic stresses." https://icleicanada.org/project/livable-cities-forum-2020/

ADVISORY: There are reports of stranded Leach’s Storm Petrels in Conception Bay South. Leach’s Storm Petrels are small black seabirds with a white rump, that be...come stranded in communities throughout Conception Bay in mid-September to mid-November. Juvenile petrels fledge their burrows from Baccalieu Island (located at the mouth of Conception Bay), and although most will go to sea, many are attracted to artificial lighting on land and vessels. Unfortunately, once the seabirds land in our community they struggle to become airborne again and this heavily contributes to their mortality. Over the past 30 years, there has been a sharp decline in the population of Leach’s Storm Petrels (approximately a 50% decrease) and this is particularly concerning for our province as Newfoundland and Labrador is home to 90% of the world’s Leach’s Storm Petrels. To help reduce the number of stranded birds (puffins and petrels) during this time of year, please reduce the use of artificial lighting as much as you can. Follow CPAWS-NL for more information. https://www.conceptionbaysouth.ca/advisory-stranded-leachs/

Today, we commemorate those who served, and continue to serve, in times of war and peace. #RemembranceDay was first celebrated following World War I, and in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, we continue to remember those who served in the Great War, as well as commemorate the enlisted people in our forces today.

If you're a young person interested in climate change issues, this is your chance to get involved! Teens and folks under 30 are encouraged to join @The Harris Centre - Memorial University in a new project called Forecast NL that looks at the impact climate change has had (and will continue to have) on NL's society and economy. They're looking for a group of young people (16+ for this project, though they would love to hear from anyone younger to chat with them about other way...s they might participate) join the Citizen Forum, a group of NL residents who will watch public programming and submit their comments (about once a month), and engage in conversations about these important issues. They're reserving at least 8 spots (out of 45) for you! You can find more info (and apply) online here: https://www.mun.ca//whatwedo/pub/climateeconomysociety.php Want to learn more?
