"Research shows animal cruelty is often a precursor to other violent offences and it's estimated that an average of 55 per cent of perpetrators of intimate partner violence commit acts of animal cruelty. In Canada, the SPCA has a unit trained to lead cruelty investigations and are vested with the power to recommend charges to the Crown. Despite this, less than half of their investigative costs are covered by government funding. By not treating these crimes with the gravity they deserve we miss important opportunities to intervene at critical times."

Each year, millions of Americans, much like Canadians, fail to appear in court for low-level offenses, & arrest warrants are issued. Text message reminders and a redesigned summons form reduced NYC failure to appear by 13-21% and lead to 30,000 fewer arrest warrants over a 3-year period.

Fascinating read. Someone actually managed to scientifically quantify the statistical advantages of being attractive, in the context of the legal system. This is the first time I've seen a researcher delve into the topic with such depth. One of the key takeaways: "Physical Attractiveness had a significant influence on judges sentencing. The more unattractive the criminal, the higher the sentence. Or conversely, the more attractive the criminal, the lower the sentence. The results of three studies show a minimum increase of 119.25% and a maximum increase of 304.88%."

In what may be the first known case of its kind, a faulty facial recognition match led to a Michigan man’s arrest for a crime he did not commit. And as facial recognition is becoming an increasingly central component of police departments’ efforts to solve crimes, we must face the reality that algorithms can harbor racial bias.

Very insightful article, especially in light of the current wave of sexual assault denunciations in Montreal. Among other things, it reveals the steps and procedures behind the experience of a plaintiff in such cases.
