Thank You Ab McDonald I have awaken to a terrible amount bad news messages this year of people within our industry passing away and nearly all of them I have wo...rked with directly as a wrestler or dealt with as a promoter. For myself personally I never know what's to be said during those times and moments and sometimes I try to say my peace as my own way of remembering that individual and dealing with the tragedy. However, some times I feel whether it is by intent or not sometimes "tributes" of fallen entertainers/celebrities can be more of a focus on the writer and for attention in today's crazed social media world so there are times I feel like it is best to say nothing at all. Ab McDonald was a very unique and kind man I had the pleasure of knowing very briefly. I am a big believer in energy and the energy we give off and receive. Ab McDonald was a man who was an absolute pleasure to be around and someone who was a very kind soul with positive energy to give to everyone around him in my time spent with him. For how good he made me feel and the people he was in contact with I wanted to share our story to pay respect to not only a legend but a great man. When I originally started putting pen to paper for CWE's Legend Of Wrestling Convention, the inaugural event last February I knew wrestling was our wheelhouse and the focus but in an effort to cross promote the brand and hopes of building a larger scale event in the years to come I felt having some sports involvement would be very beneficial to the convention. Reaching out to my friends locally in the collectibles industry I compiled a list of sports stars and celebrities still living in the area to trial run the concept. After bouncing the list off various people with different backgrounds and interests a name that kept coming back was the Winnipeg Jet's first ever captain and Stanley Cup winner Ab McDonald. Once it was decided Ab would be the guy I would track down and try to secure for the event I was able to obtain his phone number from a friend and was ready to put the plan into motion. And boy did it go badly! Really badly! I called Mr. McDonald and introduced myself and told him why I was calling. Now prior to this phone call I have spent the last 10 years bookings hundreds if not thousands of pro wrestlers. But never, not once a NHL Legend. That whole world and industry, not only the sport but as I have come to learn, but the collectibles industry as well is a LOT different than the wrestling one. Especially with certain signatures and memorabilia. Based on my experience in booking wrestlers and with the thought in mind that the sports stars were garnish to main entree that was the wrestling legends I made Mr. McDonald an offer I not only thought was reasonable for a few hours of his time at a venue located ten minutes from his house but in reality all I could budget for given the very large expense of flying in 6 wrestling legends and paying them in US funds. And I insulted him. It wasn't a tone of anger but a tone of disbelief as he explained that was a very small fraction of what he normally receives for his signing appearances. I sincerely apologized and thanked him for his time. I truthfully felt awful. It was not my intent to call a man of his stature at his home and insult him but that is what I had done. It was a very guilty feeling and lesson learned and although I had bounced my offer off a few people in that industry who seemed to think it would be fine it would force me to dig a little deeper into that world and make sure I didn't do that again. Much to my surprise I received a call a few weeks later with Ab's number coming up on the caller ID in what I assumed must have been a mistake. I picked up the call and a very friendly Ab McDonald greeted me and asked if my event was still taking place. When I told him it was and went over the specifics again he said he's gladly do it at the originally offered rate that I had felt I insulted him with. Ab would explain that he enjoyed getting out to meet his fans and felt the event was good for the community and if that is what the budget allowed, then so be it. His only request was that he signed before the dinner hour as the event fell on his birthday and he would be joining his family to celebrate. Not only was he doing us a solid and doing at the rate originally offered but on his birthday too?! Ironically the original offer was because I needed to stick to a budget and that is what it allowed. After he declined we had booked Trevor Kidd as our NHL guest so booking Ab after the fact officially put us over budget. After his incredible gesture it was well worth it. It was an absolute honor to have Ab as a guest at our first convention and he was a top of the line gentleman and professional. During the event he crossed paths with the iconic Baron Von Raschke who upon finding out it was Ab's birthday requested the microphone and performed a live musical of Happy Birthday to the audience in a way you could only imagine The Baron would that Ab got a real good laugh out of. Following Ab's departure a collector who had pre bought autograph tickets for Ab showed up not realizing his appearance had been completed. He had some incredible vintage cards and collectibles and asked if there was any way to still make it happen. I took his very valuable items and told him I would see what I could do. The following day I called Ab and explained the circumstance and asked if there was any chance of getting these pieces signed. He had already been paid and fulfilled his obligation but was not only more than happy to but invited the collector and myself to his home to have the pieces signed. Very late on a Sunday night I made the trek to his home and he invited us in. Given the hour and circumstance I fully expected a quick signature and see you later but that wasn't the kind of host Ab was. Not only did he sign and discuss the items with the collector he answered questions about his career as well. When the items were complete he asked "want to see something cool?". Ab led us down to his basement which was an absolutely amazing display of jerseys, posters, cards, and everything else you can imagine from his entire career. Every inch of this basement was covered in what probably puts some hockey museums to shame and what would be considered heaven on earth to collectors, Jets fans, and hockey fans in general. We were given the tour as Ab lit up telling us stories about certain items, teams, and teammates throughout his career, something he was still very passionate and proud of, and rightfully so! As I left his home that evening I didn't know when I would see him again but I definitely didn't think and especially didn't hope it would be the last. Thank you Ab McDonald for being an amazing, kind human being, your huge contribution to our event, and allowing me in your home to hear your iconic stories that sadly will never be told the same way again. RIP. Danny Warren
