This memorial bench was a meaningful and enjoyable commission but it has affected me in an odd way. From concept sketches to completed forgings, it has been on my mind and in my shop for several weeks allowing me to make a strong connection to the work and with what it represents to my client. Normally right after a delivery, my mind turns to my next commission but with this one, my thoughts have lingered. I hope it provides a peaceful place for remembering their loved ones.

This fully functional forged triangle padlock design dates back to the 16th century. The warded padlock measures 4" on the side by 1" deep. The key is comprised of 4 separately forged pieces (bow, collar, stem and bit) that have been fitted and then brazed together in the forge. This padlock and key took over 60 hours of forging, filing and fitting to create. The front cover has been left unriveted so it could be removed to reveal the internal workings of the padlock.

Tonight I get to watch the movie that was filmed in Almonte this summer that features my blacksmith shop. "Christmas Around the Corner" debuted on Lifetime Network last Friday but I didn't get to see it. It is showing again tonight on W Network at 8pm. My gal and I will be parking ourselves this evening with good friends who have this station. Here are some pics from the filming in my shop. I hope they kept the scenes where I was the forging body-double for Jamie Spilchuk who plays 'Andrew'!

180 Forge Works goes Hollywood! An Ottawa movie is being shot in my forge. My shop has never looked so good (or organized!) complete with fake back wall plug. Yesterday I had a good time teaching the lead actor how to work iron like a blacksmith. Barney surveys the production truck line-up this morning outside my gates. Double-time treats for him as there will be about 50 cast and crew arriving soon. ... Two days of fun ahead!! See more
