St Barbara’s Day Message From the Colonel Commandant, Senior Serving Gunner, Director of Artillery, Regimental Colonel and RSM RCA To All Ranks of The Royal Reg...iment of Canadian Artillery Ever since gunpowder made its appearance in the Western world, Saint Barbara, whose story we all know, has been invoked for aid against accident resulting from explosions. Accordingly Saint Barbara became the patron of artillerymen. She is also regarded as the patron of military engineers, armourers, gunsmiths, miners, and firefighters. On this day, the Colonel Commandant extends Loyal Greetings to the Captain General while The Regiment pauses to celebrate our distinctive Gunner heritage and the comradeship which is a vital element of the moral component of military capability. This year, our celebrations are somewhat curtailed in keeping with the public health measures implemented to impede the spread of COVID 19 in our communities and to conserve the force. Individual and collective training have been redesigned while unit and personal routines have been dramatically modified to comply with the requirements of social distancing. Leaders at all levels have had to find innovative ways of executing their responsibilities in a dispersed environment. Men and women of the Regiment have been called upon to serve their country in ways not previously contemplated including more than 550 members of the reserve component who volunteered for Class C service in anticipation of the needs of Operations LENTUS and LASER. This highlights how flexible we, as Gunners, must be as our core function will increasingly blend with non-traditional roles. Meanwhile, the extended Regimental Family have also had to contend with unprecedented disruption in their daily lives. You have adapted well and knowing you all as we do, we are confident that you will continue to overcome all challenges that come your way, as we carry on the business of our calling in this new environment. It will be difficult at times. There will be hardship to endure and sacrifices to make. But with the announcement of vaccines, there is encouraging prospect of a return to more familiar routines. Until then, just as previous generations of our Regiment, armed with good training, sound discipline and steadfast devotion to duty and to each other, rose to the occasion in times of trial, so will you. Best wishes to all for continued Good Shooting. Take care and stay well. UBIQUE!

Today is the 70th anniversary of 2 RCHA! The CO, LCol Sarah Heer, and Canada's Senior Serving Gunner, LGen Mike Rouleau, would like to extend their best wishes ...to all members of the Regimental family on this special occasion. _______________________ To the Past, Present and Future 2 RCHA members and Families, Over the past 7 days, we have celebrated the accomplishments of 2 RCHA throughout the last 70 years, marking each decade with a day of recognition on our social media platforms. This has culminated in each Battery recognizing and observing this momentous anniversary in their own, unique activities today. It is with great esteem that I say that what 2 RCHA has accomplished throughout its storied history is truly awesome in the literal sense of the word. The RSM and I continue to be impressed and inspired by the ongoing accomplishments of this Regimental family and we are sincerely humbled and honoured to be able to lead 2 RCHA into the next 70 years. On 27 July 2020, 2 RCHA stood up Task Force UNIFIER, in preparation for deployment to the Ukraine, marking the first foray into the next chapter in the 2 RCHA history books. As the Lead Mounting Unit for the Task Force, 2 RCHA will again have the privilege and responsibility to lead Canadian Soldiers into the fray. In addition to Task Force Ukraine, E Battery is currently deployed to Latvia as part of Operation REASSURANCE in support of NATO operations in the region, we have 5 members from across the Regiment currently deployed in the Middle East on Operation IMPACT and BC Y Battery is deployed to Mali as part of Operation PRESENCE. As has come to be expected of 2 RCHA, we are truly living up to the regimental motto of the Artillery, UBIQUE. As the sun sets on the first 7 decades of 2 RCHA accomplishments and we set our sights towards the next 70 years, the RSM and I would like to convey our intense pride to be at the helm of the 2 RCHA family. The contributions, sacrifices and impact that 2 RCHA has consistently brought to the fight have been, and continue to be, felt all over the globe, with members of 2 RCHA regularly giving everything they have to ensure the peace and security for those requiring it. From Korea, through Germany, Cyprus, Former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, and now Eastern Europe, 2 RCHA has been at the forefront of every major Canadian Military Engagement since its inception in 1950 and will continue to serve in whatever capacity it is called to going forward. Thank you for your continued hard work, dedication and commitment to each other and to this Regimental Family, Happy 70th Anniversary! Initially signed and prepared for presentation in 2018 and 2019, these military commendations were presented recently to six of seven military members at 1RCHA.... 3 Cdn Div DComd BGen Dave Awalt, during a Friday afternoon visit to 1RCHA, presented the seven commendations. He did apologize for the tardiness of the presentations, noting some of the recipients have been promoted since their actions led to being recommended for the commendations. "We have to do a better job of presenting these," he offered, adding 3 Cdn Div needs to visit CFB Shilo more often in the future. 3 Cdn Div commendations 1RCHA soldiers received were signed by 3 Cdn Div Comd BGen Stephen Lacroix, while the Canadian Joint Operations Command (CJOC) Commendation was signed by Comd LGen Michael Rouleau. The lone Commander Canadian Army commendation was signed by Canadian Army Comd LGen Wayne Eyre. Welcoming BGen Awalt to CFB Shilo were A/CO Maj Scott Youngson, the 2IC once incoming CO LCol David Brassard arrives in August, and A/RSM MWO Jason Tomlinson. Here are the recipients of the commendations presented during an outdoor awards and honours ceremony following COVID-19 presentation protocols: In recognition of Bdr Nathaniel Ironman's community involvement with the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation chapter of the Bear Clan Patrol since 2018, he received a 3 Cdn Div Command Team Commendation. As a volunteer and founding member of the Bear Clan Patrol, he used traditional indigenous practices to provide strength and stability to him hometown in the midst of a crisis related to the community's health and well-being. With B Bty, Bdr Ironman's volunteer work positively shaped community progress and brought great credit to 3 Cdn Div. Sgt Dustin Desroches and Sgt Robert Kennis both received a 3 Cdn Div Command Team Commendation. On Dec. 29, 2018, then MBdr Desrochers and Sgt Kennis of 1RCHA responded to, and aided in controlling, the scene of a tractor trailer accident between Revelstoke and Roger's Pass, BC. With the support of other military members on scene, Sgt Desroches immediately treated the driver's injuries, contacted 911 to report the motor vehicle collision (MVC), and completed an effective handover to Emergency Services upon their arrival, bringing credit to 3 Cdn Div. At the MVC scene, Sgt Kennis secured the area while assessing the dangers, supervised the recovery of the driver, and was also part of the handover to Emergency Services. Capt Keun Woo Kang also garnered a 3 Cdn Div Command Team Commendation in recognition of his investment as a Designated Assistant on two occasions during the fall of 2918. As a CAF representative to the next of kin, and the next of kin's ambassador to the chain of command, Capt Kang provided exceptional support to the members and their families during an emotional time, while keeping his Chain of Command fully apprised as each situation evolved, ensuring the needs of the families were treated as priority at all times. Capt Kang's dedication to duty brought credit to 3 Cdn Div. Sgt D.R. Fischer received his CJOC Command Commendation while deployed to Latvia from August to November 2017 as part of Canada's contribution to the enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group. As the Supply Technician then as MCpl Fischer with Z Bty, he superbly planned, executed, and tracked equipment transfers and demonstrated the Canadian Armed Forces' fire support capability on the international stage. He also assumed responsibility for developing Z Bty's deployed Defence Resource Management Information System, which not only set the conditions for success for this initial rotation but for subsequent rotations as well. His exemplary dedication and technical expertise reflected great credit upon him and CJOC. Another CJOC commendation was presented to Capt Charles Gresl. Then MWO Gresl was deployed to Latvia from August to November 2017 as part of Canada's contribution to the NATO deterrent in the Baltic. As the Z Bty BSM within the Enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group, he fostered strong esprit de corps and was key to the planning and execution of the battery's deployment, making it ready to conduct live-fire exercises within two months. His superb leadership and vast technical expertise reflected great credit upon him and CJOC. Maj Trevor Michelsen, who works out the RCA Museum, was the lone recipient of a Commander Canadian Army commendation presented by the Canadian Army Comd LGen Eyre. His CCA commendation read "from August 2016 to present, Maj Michelsen has been serving as the Regimental Major for the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery. During this time, he demonstrated outstanding dedication and initiative in the preservation of the RCA's heritage and traditions. Through his efforts, long forgotten traditions have been brought back anew and new initiatives have been furthered that bring the Corps into the 21st Century, bringing credit to the Canadian Army." NEWS BREAK - IMPORTANT Visitor prohibition restriction to be rescinded... Shilo Stag Restricted access to this Base during the COVID-19 pandemic will be rescinded effective June 22, according to BComd LCol Jeff Lyttle. "We are authorized to rescind the visitor prohibition restriction at CFB Shilo and we will therefore be adopting a more open Base posture," he announced June 19. "The Commissionaires will cease identification checks at the south gate. "RP Ops will be removing the barriers and verifying the condition of the northern access. The north gate will reopen as soon as possible once the change in posture occurs." This does not negate the requirement for proper bookings for appointments to use the GSH or tee times at the Shilo Country Club, but rather allows for visitors such as family to now be authorized to access the Base. "Visitors will be allowed to come onto the Base with the reminder that anyone who is symptomatic should call Tele Health for civilians or 11 CF H Svc if military," he explained. "The Bases policy on self-isolation mirrors that of the province of Manitoba for travellers heading into eastern Canada or returning from it." LCol Lyttle added, "IAW with the provincial plan for phase three of 'Restoring Safe Services,' they will be required to self-isolate for 14 days." For Base services, according to LCol Lyttle, "we will still be taking steps to enable contact tracing and the appointment bookings discussed as part of our business resumption plan will remain in effect." If soldiers and their families have questions or concerns about the opening of the Base to visitors then the Base G3 Maj Talon Desjardins or BComd will be happy to assist. "Thank-you for your patience," he offered following more than 90 days of Base lockdown which started March 13.
