Today’s #MightyMaroonMachine Year in Review takes us back to Spring Break (early March) when our Arctic Company Response Group conducted winter warfare training... at Ex NORTHERN SOJOURN at 5 Wing Goose Bay.

A message from the 5th Canadian Division HQ Padre As we head into Block Leave, on behalf of the Div Chap and myself, I would like to take this opportunity to w...ish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. This has been a difficult year in many ways. The other day, I asked my 19-year-old to say a quick prayer. He sighed and began with a line that caught my attention, "Lord, it is so hard!". At the end of his short prayer, I asked him what he longs for. Without missing a beat he said, "Going to school, my friends, classroom learning. I realized that he has been finding it more difficult than we were aware of. If you have been feeling tired and exhausted, you are not alone. Chaplains have noticed CAF-wide, a general sense of tiredness mixed-in with some anxiety as the pandemic drags on. This is compounded by the fact that many will not be able to travel home to be with their families for the holidays. Some lost their loved ones this year and were not able to travel or give a final hug. COVID-19 is not only a killer but a thief that robs and denies people of meaningful goodbyes and closures. It has been exhausting. In the midst of a pandemic filled with uncertainty, loneliness, suffering, grief, and death, the message of Christmas reminds us that this too shall pass and that there is hope. It offers us an opportunity to slow down, pause, lament our losses, celebrate the good we have (however different and incomplete), refill our minds and hearts with hope, and reconstitute for a better, healthier, and happier year. Please do not hesitate to call at any time if you need to chat. May all be well with you and your family! November 11th, 2020 - the flags are half-mast on the grounds of Government House in memory of veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice during conflict. Remember...ing our veterans means their sacrifices will never be forgotten. 8:00am - as Honorary Colonel of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment I participated in the 1st Battalion The Royal Newfoundland Regiment Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Newfoundland and Labrador Command, Royal Canadian Legion & Artillery Gun Memorial (CAIRN). Honoured to lay a wreath on behalf of the Regiment which is celebrating its 225th anniversary this year-motto Better Than the Best. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.... We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. - Lieutenant Colonel John Alexander McRae See more

Today we would like to commemorate not only an individual, but a family with a large military history: the Wyatt-Blyde Family. For clarity we will start from the beginning, making our way forward in time: George Blyde: British Soldier who fought in the Crimean War. After the war, he was stationed in Fort Townsend in St John's, where he married, settled and had children:... -Michael John Blyde: Fought with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in the 1st World War. He died in action at Sulva Bay in Turkey at the age of 19.. He is buried at Hill 10 cemetery. -Phillip Blyde: He was 19 years old when he went to the front, and was wounded in action, leading to a partial leg amputation. George Blyde also had grandchildren who served: -William Blyde: Served with the 59th (Heavy) Regiment during the Second World War. -John Blyde: (57th Heavy) Field Regiment. -Wallace Blyde: Served in the Royal Navy. -Cyril Blyde: Served with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment (which at the time was for home defense). -Margaret Blyde: Women's Army Corps. On the Wyatt side: Edward Wyatt: 1st Battalion, The Royal Newfoundland. Edward was a machine gunner during the 1st World War. Edward served with his brother, Walter, and took part in the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey. Described as a sweet, nice, and gentle man, Edward released after the war. We will remember them.

Today we would like to commemorate CQM Sergeant Victor Taylor. Sgt Taylor served with the 1st Battalion, The Royal Newfoundland Regiment during the 1st World War. With the number #111 Sgt Taylor was one of the few men who went over the top on July 1st 1916 at Beaumont-Hamel and reported for roll-call the next day. His cousin, Charles Taylor, was killed in action during the same battle.... Sgt Taylor was originally part of the Methodist Guard, a para-military force which were very common during the time (including other groups such as the Church Lads Brigade, the Catholic Cadet Corps, and the Newfoundland Highlanders) Born on November 10th, 1893 Victor Taylor lived on the South Side in St John’s. He was working as a machinist with the Railway when war broke out. At the end of the war he returned to the South Side and continued working as a machinist for years to come. After the war he married Madeleine Flynn, and had three children: George, John, and Mary. Medals (Left to right): 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal We will remember them.
