Hello, today we have some good news and some less good news. First, the good news - parents who are looking for activities for their children, Scouts Canada has created a 'Scouting at Home' program that is accessible to everyone. Information is available on the Scouts Canada website here: https://www.scouts.ca/progra/scouting-at-home/overview.html - Scouter Steve’s nephew especially enjoyed the obstacle course. The less good news - we have had to cancel the annual flea mar...ket on the holiday Monday this May. This is our annual fundraiser that supports fun Scouting adventures for youth in our community throughout the year. Due to the amount of planning involved, and the uncertainty we are all facing, this is the right decision for us to be making at this time. We will miss seeing you this year, but we are still here and we will look for an alternative when it is reasonable to do so. We hope parents will enjoy the Scouting at home material. Please take a moment to look around the website and feel free to message us if you have any questions. Registration will be open again soon and it can be done online. Our program is offered to youth between the ages of 5 and 14. We meet either Wednesday or Thursday (depends on age) evenings at St. Pat's school in Rockland. We hope to kick off programming in September as we have for the last 40+ years! We are very welcoming to new volunteers and invite you to join us in helping to achieve the Scouting mission to 'help develop well-rounded youth, better prepared for success in the world'. Thank you, www.1strocklandscouts.ca
We are very sorry to be announcing that CCJ20 will not be taking place this summer. In light of all that is going on and despite detailed planning and analysis... on how we could try to manage the risk, there is but one conclusion. In essence, we are unable to host the event this summer and assure the safety of the Youth, Scouters and Volunteers. Now, for some good news. We have spoken with our volunteer committee, and the majority of the team are able to run CCJ21! We will be scheduling the event for July 4th - 10th, 2021. CCJ20 update. We have been informed by the event organizers that CCJ20 has been cancelled. A disappointing turn of events but perhaps not unexpected.
Looking for some activities for your Scout? The UK Scout Association has 100 indoor activities for kids. https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/
We hope everyone is coping with the realities of social distancing. One thing youth might need at a time like this is a project or activity to occupy their mind and time. Why not choose a Personal Achievement Badge and have your Cub work on it? Generally we like to discuss the activities with the Cubs prior to them doing them, but given the current circumstances we can make an exception. Have a look at the badges and the Plan Do Review cycle and see which badge your Cub is i...nterested. Remember that the activities have to be new to your youth, not something they are experienced in, and there needs to be four individual components in order to complete the badge. As an example, for the Home badge a cub might decide to try baking bread for the family. The plan is to make the bread, they gather ingredients, then the bread is baked with assistance if needed, and after the whole process is reviewed so the Cub can identify what they learned and how to improve the results in the future. Do three more adventures like this and we can award the cub their Home Personal Achievement Badge! https://scoutsca.s3.amazonaws.com/2019/02/cs-pab-guide.pdf
Update: All Scouting activities are suspended until at least April 5th. This means we will not have weekly meeting and the Kub Kar rally has been postponed.
With today’s announcement concerning school closures we are presented with some challenges. Scouts Canada is not asking us to cancel meetings at this time so we will continue to meet. Next week we did not have a meeting planned due to March Break, however, if we are able we will try and find options for the two weeks following. If the Ontario government indicates our activity should be suspended then we will of course do so. Obviously as parents you are in the best position ...to make decisions concerning your children and we ask that you use your own best judgement. How this will affect the Kub Kar rally has yet to be determined. All announcements from Scouts Canada will be posted here: https://www.scouts.ca/news-and-events/overview.html
We don’t have access to the school tonight. Scouter Lyle (Baloo) has arranged for us to meet at the Independent instead. Please come to the classroom upstairs. Meeting time is still 7:00 until 8:30 as per usual.
Tonight’s meeting cancelled. As per usual, when buses are cancelled our booking at the school is also cancelled, so we wont have access to the school tonight. Often in these cases we move our meeting outside, however the weather is particularly unpleasant with the snow being very heavy and very wet. Since we wont have a warm place to retreat to if a Cub gets wet and cold we will be cancelling tonight's meeting.
STEM will be a big part of the CCJ experience. Hands on learning make activities super fun for Cubs. . If you know of any Ventures, Rovers or Scouters that... love event programming we are looking for Offer Of Service staff to help run a fabulous program this summer.
