Archive Series, Sam, 31 Dec 2016, basement hallway . With the world in lockdown, I’m sifting through the archives, discovering and retouching new favourites. This is Sam, a close friend of the family with a 50 megawatt smile, from my first real attempt at a Peter Hurley style headshot. . I had just joined the headshotcrew a few months before and consumed as much as I could while slowly assembling a lighting kit. This series is lit with just two lights and a reflector. The bac...kground is a 6’ octa facing the camera and there’s a 4’ octa overhead. The bottom reflector fills out the classic clamshell. . The highlights are clearly blown and I overcooked the kick, but there’s no doubt Sam’s personality carries the shots. These four images were from a 12-frame sequence that lasted at most 5 minutes. . Sam's been in front of my camera several more times over the years and remains one of my favourite faces to capture. The blue hair is gone, but that smile still shines bright. Archive Series, Nick, 26 Sep 2017, Ottawa. . With the world in lockdown, I’m sifting through the archives, discovering and retouching new favourites. This is Nick, another super-talented local actor that was kind enough to sit for a session during my push to Associate days. . By this time I had moved the studio to the family room - a bright airy space with sweeping high ceilings - allowing me much for flexibility for lighting. I also had two headshot of the week wins unde...r my belt (the max permitted) and felt my lighting was consistent enough to start assembling a portfolio. In a space of three months I must have had 60 actors flow through the studio. My goal was simple - get 15 headshot images strong enough to get past Peter Hurley’s personal review. Sure, the Associate status in the Headshot Crew that came with it would be cool, but it was the confirmation of consistent performance that was most important. . Nick was one of the peeps that made it through. This image is the frame exactly after the shot that made it through the Associate review and is still a keystone shot in my portfolio. It was lit with four 1x3 strips in a square setup, with the vertical strips carrying most of the load, and another strip for kick. . I’m a bit heavier on the retouch these past few days - maybe I’m going through a gritty phase. . Thanks for reading to the end. Archive Series, Kimberly, 6 April 2017, basement studio . With the world in lockdown, I’m sifting through the archives, discovering and retouching new favourites. This series would not be complete without a picture of Kimberly, an amazingly talented and wildly successful local actor that first walked into my makeshift basement studio three years ago. . It was a cramped windowless space, with a 6’4 ceiling and almost no room for stands. My used background was propped on a cou...ch behind Kim’s stool and I was on my knees behind the tripod leaning hard into the tv stand behind me. Having just completed the Intensive workshop with Peter Hurley the month before, I was was feeling encouraged to try his iconic triangle lighting setup with my strobes and soft boxes. But in such a cramped space I was bouncing light everywhere and just not getting the depth I wanted. Hanging blackout curtains along the walls helped a bit, but I ended up abandoning the triangle setup shortly after this shoot, only regaining the confidence to try it again once I got the flex kit. . Kimberly’s career has continued to skyrocket in the meantime. I’ve had the pleasure of getting her back in front of my camera two more times since this initial shoot and it’s always a joy to hear about her most recent successes.
