As part of our #DEAM celebration all October Long, EmployUsYQL is profiling employers who have had success in hiring employees with disabilities, and we’re also... putting a spotlight on self-employed citizens of Lethbridge who have a disability. Meet Chris Schamber, When Chris was a young man he was in an a diving accident. As a result, he is now a C-3-4-5 quadriplegic. Obviously, this had a profound effect on his life. But Chris says he was eventually able to come to terms with his accident and look for a way to push himself and give back to the community. For the first 10 years or so after my accident, I wasn’t really sure what I could do. I was unsure of my abilities. But eventually I decided to start pushing myself; going to school and doing physical therapy to expand what I was capable of doing. Chris says he started with upgrading and then enrolled in the Engineering Drafting and Design program. Chris eventually found that he was quite passionate about accessibility in Lethbridge. He was constantly finding major problems that someone in a mobility aid or wheelchair would struggle with, and he felt he could offer guidance and advocacy. So, he started his own consulting business Quad Design & Barrier-Free Consulting. Through his business, he offers solutions to private and public clients. Whether they wish to improve the accessibility of their own home, or if they are a government entity looking to intelligently design a public space to be barrier-free, Chris consults them all. Chris says, he wants to do what he can to it easier for people to get around the city in a more inclusive environment Being able to go to someone’s home for Christmas dinner. That’s something people take for granted. But it’s something that I’ve been able to do thanks to barrier-free design http://visitablehousingcanada.com In addition to accessibility work, Chris also provides payroll and bookkeeping services for families and individuals who independently arrange disability supports for themselves or their loved ones. Chris taught himself how to do this, and is quite proud of what he’s been able to provide. http://www.quaddesign.ca/payroll_services.html Chris plans to help individuals/families who are currently on or thinking about Family Managed Care or Self Managed Care have the resources to live a more independent life and work on creating a more Barrier Free Tomorrow He’s even been able to redesign his home and his backyard so that he can fully enjoy his home. (Chris pictured here in his backyard, modified for him to be able to garden and enjoy his firepit)
