323 Blue Heron Sea Cadets 30.11.2020

Today marks the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic. The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous battle of the Second World War and one in which Canada played a central role. The battle began on the opening day of the war in September 1939 and ended almost six years later with Germany's surrender in May 1945. Canada played a key role in the Allied struggle for control of the North Atlantic, as German submarines worked furiously to cripple the convoys ship...ping crucial supplies to Europe. July 1942 was the first month of the war that replacement shipping began to exceed losses. The turning point of the Battle of the Atlantic came in May 1943. ... Victory in the Battle of the Atlantic paved the way for the invasion of mainland Europe in 1944 and the ultimate Allied victory. The outcome of the battle was a strategic victory for the Alliesthe German blockade failedbut at great cost: 3,500 merchant ships and 175 warships were sunk in the Atlantic for the loss of 783 U-boats (the majority of them Type VII submarines) and 47 German surface warships, including 4 battleships (Bismarck, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, and Tirpitz), 9 cruisers, 7 raiders, and 27 destroyers. Of the U-boats, 519 were sunk by British, Canadian, or other allied forces, while 175 were destroyed by American forces; 15 were destroyed by the Soviets and 73 were scuttled by their crews before the end of the war for various reasons. The Battle of the Atlantic has been called the "longest, largest, and most complex" naval battle in history. I have attended this service of remembrance on the first Sunday in May, as a Sea Cadet or a Naval officer for over 20 years. This year we won't be able to gather to remember but I will still make time in my day to stop and remember those who have gone before us and take time to remember their sacrifice for our freedoms. "At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them."
