Nightstop Host Profile: Meet Dani and Connor. Dani and Connor are obsessed with their cats Hobbes and Zoe! Hobbes is so friendly and loves meeting new people while Zoe is shy at first, but once she feels safe she is the biggest cuddle bug. Dani and Connor love tea and coffee. Dani used to be a barista and can make pretty tasty drinks. Dani likes art and creating things. She has an assortment of crafts for anyone wishing to explore their creative side while staying at their ho...me. Connor is into music and can play guitar and bass. He is a good teacher and can teach anyone looking to jam or learn a few chords. On most evenings Dani and Connor can be found in their living room watching something on Netflix or Disney Plus. If they’re feeling competitive, you can find them pulling out a game like Scrabble, Code Names, or Forbidden Island! On the skills a volunteer can bring to Nightstop: An effective volunteer should practice good hospitality and offer a welcoming environmentMany of the youth could be coming from stressful situations and just need a place to be on their own to relax and rest. - Dani Become a Host Volunteer with Nightstop. Youth homelessness is NOT a choice. Abuse and neglect are two of the main reasons why young people leave home. 50% of youth coming to our 360kids Home Base are experiencing abusive situations. Several studies show that nearly 70% of homeless youth have experienced some form of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse. An overwhelming majority of all youth served by 360kids have experienced one or more of the abuse listed above.... Many youth leave home because they are forced to or because they are in unsafe situations. To support 360kids and York Region youth dealing with homelessness please go to our website and support our programs: https://www.360kids.ca/ #360kids #youthhomelessness #yorkregion #donate

Homelessness in York Region is often hidden homeless, as youth may be couch surfing with family or friends, coffee-shop hopping throughout the night, or staying in unsafe conditions. However, just because it is not seen doesn’t mean it does not exist. Homelessness is a growing concern in York Region. It is estimated that on any given day there are over 300 homeless youth ages 16-26, in York Region who are without a safe place to stay at night. Through our 4 pillars of programming (employment, housing, education, health & wellness) 360kids aims to ensure that every kid dealing with homelessness is given wraparound care and support. Canadian actor and comedian Jim Carrey experienced homelessness as just 12-years-old when his father lost his job. Forced to live in a van, Carrey told James Lipton on Inside the Actors Studio that this time of his life was a traumatic kick in the guts. Jim said that it was during the tough times that he developed a sense of humor. Youth homelessness can happen to anyone and the loss of employment is a top reason why youth are left without a safe place to stay. ... CBC B.C. recently published an article on the The New Leaf project by the Foundations for Social Change which did a study on what happens when you give 50 homeless Lower Mainland residents $7,500 in cash and what happens when you don't do anything at all. They checked on them over a year to see how they were doing. The findings showed: - Those who received $7,500 spent fewer days homeless than those who didn't, and moved into stable housing after an average of three months..., compared to those in the group who didn't receive any money, who took an average of five months. - Almost 70% of people who received the payments were food secure after one month. - People retained over $1,000 for 12 months Too often people dismiss the idea of giving homeless people money because they assume it will be mismanaged, Williams said. "It challenges stereotypes we have here in the West about how to help people living on the margins," she said. #homelessness #homeless #covid #charity #community #nonprofit #homelesslivesmatter #coronavirus #donate #homelessnessawareness #poverty #endhomelessness #love

Nightstop recognizes the risk factors and concerns involved with hosting during COVID-19 however, we cannot provide safe housing for young people without the wonderful help of community volunteers. #HappyThanksgiving If it's one thing we're thankful for at 360kids, it's all of our staff, volunteers, partners, donors and supporters! We would like to thank Bell Let's Talk for selecting 360kids as one of their 2020 grant recipients. Bell Let's Talk aims to help create positive change for those living with mental health issues, and is investing $20,000 to 360kids to ensure our counsellors and front line workers will be given the very best training. This grant will play a key role in providing trauma informed counselling to our 360kids team. With these tools and skills, staff will be able to build stronge...r relationships and better support the youth they interact with daily. We would also like to thank Councillor Karen Rea, Frank Scarpitti and the City of Markham for presenting a certificate of appreciation to both 360kids and Bell Let's Talk for the joint dedication to empowering youth. It is with continued community support that we are able to accomplish our goal of helping youth overcome crisis and transition to a state of safety & stability. Young people accessing Nightstop are often leaving situations of abuse, neglect, rejection, and have never had the opportunity to experience a healthy relationship within their home. Nightstop provides the opportunity for young people accessing the program to see what a healthy, caring, and stable relationship looks like through the support and care offered to them by our Host volunteers. Show a young person that they matter by volunteering as a Host with Nightstop. Visit us at https://www.360kids.ca/programs-services/housing/nightstop/.
