With 130km/hr winds Mother Nature likes to test the install techniques and material chosen. Replaced the damaged vinyl siding with SmartBoard and 4 SmartTrim. Used 3 self tapping screws to fasten into the steel stud framing. What’s the main and repetitive issue we find for shingles flying off? Nails are too high missing the proper strip, and insufficient amount fastened. Get six nails into the sweet spot (double overlap) and your shingles will be golden against Southern Albertan winds. (Along with a quality chosen shingle type, and proper adhesive.)

Nice cedar conversion to OC Duration Teak shingles. Cedar is a beautiful product but drys out and cracks with the arid Southern Alberta summer weather. Its better suited for climates with more moisture like the West coast. Most clients with cedar roofs tend to choose the option of conversion to a different roofing system rather than restoration. The homeowners made a great colour choice on this project, the Teak pairs nicely with the brick and colour scheme.

Fun build on this modern horizontal fence! Pressure treated fence boards attached to 4x4 posts cemented 3 into the ground. Small base footing and stained to protect against ground moisture and rot. The roof restoration on this 108 year old home turned out great! Brought this beautiful piece of history up to modern standards. removed one layer of t-lock shingles, and a second layer of century old cedar shingles. found suspected large gaps between many of the old shiplap boards so installed new wood sheathing for proper fastening hold. ... full ice & water and synthetic underlayment wrap. installed superior Owens Corning Duration Sierra Grey shingles. removed and replaced the vinyl siding along the dormers to install new step flashing and wall metal for a proper water tight seal. removed the skylight at the bottom of the back valley and replaced it with a sun-tube installed further back to avoid any more leaking. Lots of detail work on this one, but well worth the end result!

Happy our crew gets to travel around Southern Alberta putting on great roofs for friendly clients like Karen and Bruce. Nice light coloured Desert Tan shingles to match the brick on the front of their house. We added five attic exhaust vents to this home to help this roof finally breathe.

Some old craftsman tar upgraded to steel chimney flashing. Tar is a great adhesive, but starts to crack after a few seasons if left open to direct weathering. Metal will continue doing its job for decades. Try your best, tar the rest is not a viable option for roofing.

Quarry Grey shingles with charcoal steel metal flashings. Out with the ugly brown and in with a colour which suits the house nicely.

Ripped open this roof and found a ton of rot. Removed and replaced the rotten boards, added Ice & Water shield, steel step flashing, and ordered some custom C-bent metal to cap it off. Nice to turn a deteriorating roof into a restored water-tight system.

Found this certificate for cedar shingles from 1935 stapled to the roof deck. Fun little Southside home with two layers of t-lock shingles installed over cedar. Bet this attic space is happy to start breathing again with all those layers off and added vents! Always interesting to see what youll uncover!

Why Are Shingles Flying Around Lethbridge? The top reasons we run into time and time again: - Nailing too high... Shingles have a sweet spot where top and bottom sections overlap. That white line along the nail strip isnt for looks, its to show installers where to nail. Missing it by even 1/2 an inch can result in being high-risk for wind blow offs. - Not enough nails Shingle manufacturers require six nails. Especially for an extremely windy area like Southern Alberta. Nails are inexpensive, dont cheap out on them. - Using low-grade shingles The shingles below may work well in other parts of North America, but we recommend using superior systems for the Lethbridge area. The manufacturer of the shingle below require proper tar-tabbing application for the full wind warranty. There are many great roofing companies in town who would be happy to educate you on proper roofing systems and supply techniques for Lethbridge and its surrounding area. Tip: vet potential contractors for reviews and referrals, receive proof of WCB and insurances, receive three quotes, research the roofing system the contractor is offering to install, receive a signed copy of workmanship warranty.
