The New Brunswick Medical Society recognizes Mental Illness Awareness Week. Did you know that 1 in 5 Canadians experience a mental health problem or illness eve...ry year? The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant mental health challenges for many Canadians, and New Brunswick physicians recognize the need for improved access to mental health services in our province. Return to school is just around the corner. Our province's Department of Education and Public Health has worked collaboratively and has done a phenomenal job in maintaining the lowest infection numbers in the country. WAY TO GO NB!! GNB has just published a 65 page document detailing directions for schools and districts in preparation for Return to School. https://www2.gnb.ca//Dep/ed/pdf/ReturnSchool_Districts.pdf... Every single one of my patients in my consulting pediatric practice has a medical or mental health condition. I can understand that the school districts will want to safeguard these vulnerable students, however, it will be only rare and unique circumstances that I will write a letter of support to keep these patients home from school. If that is what you choose to do as a family, I will support your decision, but we cannot expect the district to create home schooling plans for every child, even those that may be slightly more vulnerable. For the mental and social benefits of our youth, I think it is imperative that kids return to their structured routine at school. With public health measures implemented in our schools, this could be our healthiest and safest year yet! My own children have been back to full time daycare since May and have maintained their longest illness-free period related to the new safety regulations.

I have started a library at my office, hoping to allow parents to take books out and return when completed. We haven't been keeping track well enough and many of the books are missing... If someone is still benefiting from it, please only return it when you're done. But this brings up the topic that if you have good books that have helped you in your parenting or medical journey - please respond below with titles and we will do our best to update our library. We are also open to book donations!

We recognize that it can be difficult for children to understand why it's important for them to wear masks, but our Public Health officials are recommending com...munity masks be worn when physical distancing of 2-meters cannot be guaranteed. Here is an infographic with some strategies that may help your child get used to wearing a mask.

Our kids have been superheroes during this pandemic as they adjust to all the changes in their little lives, but they’re also allowed to grieve what they miss (sports, graduations, vacations, routines, breakfast programs, friends, teachers, mentors, parents that are not stressed....) https://youtu.be/sg8MdXac6kY
