Today's asynch lecture is simply about how we can view grades in my course from the context of earning experience points and leveling up. [see corresponding image] I settled on some level names and experience points (XP) needed to achieve these levels for my course. The XP are points earned through value of various assessment throughout the term. I've made a special reward for achieving Level 3 just to motivate learners to try hard to get there and not just the passing le...vel: the lowest category on task grading scale up to that point will be eliminated. [see corresponding image] Then finally, I'm adding in some course content easter eggs in some of the tasks that earn XP where if students notice and follow-through, they'll get bonus XP. What tips do you have for gamifying your content?

I opened my class on Zoom today with this little task while waiting for all learners to arrive. It really worked well because: 1. It gave everyone something to think about and do instead of just sitting patiently waiting for the whole group to log in. 2. It made use of Zoom functions (annotate > stamps) that I want learners to know how to use later. 3. It activated schema perhaps, as learners might wonder how this question is related to the lesson coming up.

You've made it into my materials for next week. No, the unit isn't about relationships, family, or LGBTQIA. Yet, you can still be included. It's actually about context. via Bingo Love (Image Comics)

Yes, it's a curious outcome of a loaded term. There's also Queen Latifah as a precedent, though I'd have suggested it was also a deliberate way to obscure the root meaning so it's easier to create overtones of nefarious meaning.
