Nurturing your adopted pet today, and every day. National Mixed Breed Dog Day (July 31st and December 2nd) encourages us to embrace, save and celebrate mixed breed dogs. Approximately 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds, and their well-being depends largely on being adopted by caring pet parents. Today is a wonderful time to give your adopted pet some extra love, and to consider bringing a new fur baby into your family.... We all want to give our pets the best opportunities to thrive. One way is to integrate healing dietary ingredients and nutraceutical oils that promote optimal pet health.

We all feel anxiety in a very unique way, and so do our pets. Barking, whining, whimpering. Hostility and detachment from playful activities. These are all possible manifestations of anxiety in your pet. When anxiety is left untreated, symptoms such as appetite loss and mood disorders can creep in. Like humans, pet anxiety requires mindful attention and care. Common reasons for pet anxiety can range from past events, abandonment, separation, neglect, fear of being alone, noi...se, travel, contact with new people or children. Here are four helpful tips to soothe anxiety in your pets (most are well-suited for humans, too). Physical movement. Anxiety can often cause a surplus of energy. One way to release this stressful energy is to exert your pet’s muscles. By playing outside in the park or enjoying time on the trails, your pet will benefit from fresh air, increased endorphins, and quality time with their human (you). Close contact. Pet distress (especially separation anxiety) can often be calmed through physical contact, such as picking them up or petting them with a caring intention. Massaging your pet can also help alleviate tension and anxiety. If your pet is sensitive to touch or shows aversion to physical contact, this could be a sign of past abuse or injury, and may require deeper investigation. Always listen to what your pet is telling you. In honouring your pet’s preferences and signals of consent, you can respect their individuality and personal space. Music therapy. Both humans and pets are emotionally affected by the sound of music. The therapeutic quality of music has been shown to calm and relax the mind. Soft melodic music can also relieve noise sensitivity by cancelling out loud street noises, or other anxiety-inducing noise for your pet. CBD and adaptogenic herbs. Thanks to their natural calming properties, CBD and adaptogens are extremely effective in alleviating anxiety - especially in unison. CBD helps bring the body back into alignment, balance and homeostasis. It also increases immunity while relieving pain and inflammation. Adaptogens operate in a similar capacity, by combating stress and decreasing cortisol levels. Together, CBD and adaptogenic herbs are nature’s most advanced remedies for pet anxiety.

Has the COVID-19 pandemic given you way more time to exercise your pet? Or does it feel like it has given your pet way more time to exercise your patience? It’s probably both. Without a doubt, it’s a period of adjustment for pets just as much as it is for us owners. Making the most of a challenging situation is our job in this relationship, and staying healthy and well behaved, that’s their job, with a little support from us! We shared some information in our last email ab...out the importance of routine for pets, and how to slowly introduce new patterns so as to minimize the stress they feel with change. Another effective means of stress reduction is exercise, especially for younger pets. If your pet has become accustomed to two 30 minutes walks each day, and now you have time to make each of them a full hour walk, take advantage of that opportunity. Your pet will thank you in a thousand small ways. And we are not referring to how many times they will pee. Remember the law of inertia. This is also, for many of us, a time to really focus on ensuring that our pets have the best diet we can offer them. Particularly for older pets: ensuring they are maximizing their nutrition opportunity, and balancing that with a manageable exercise routine will keep them going longer and happier. Remember the law of inertia: a body in motion tends to stay in motion, and a body at rest tends to stay at rest. This rule applies equally with aging humans, or asteroids in space for that matter, but it is so important for senior pets to remain mobile and active, because once they stop moving, they tend not to regain that mobility.

Hi Friends Hope everyone is doing well. DOGMATIC ... How changes to your routine impact your pet. They are creatures of habit. Have you noticed the behaviour patterns your pets follow, and how predictable they become over time? Some pets are so intelligent they know which day of the week is garbage day, which weekend each month you travel to visit your parents, and what kind of day you’re going to have by the outfit you wear. Okay, that last one is pretty iffy - no proof for that at all - but it sure seems that way sometimes! The truth is, pets are extremely empathetic, and they become completely adjusted to meal times, walk times, when you leave and when you return. And when that changes, they can experience significant stress. Needless to say, the sheer volume of change that has recently impacted society, with self-isolation and the shift to either working from home or looking for work, has had an impact on yours, ours and everyone else’s pet. Here are some small steps you can take to mitigate that stress, and help your pet cope with the inevitability of change. Go slow. As it is precisely the break from routine that increases their cortisol levels and makes them nervous, the first step is to ease them into the new routine. If you are suddenly home all the time, when you used to be at work during the day, stay with your typical pre-work walk, hug and feeding regimen, for example, at as close to the same time as possible, and then begin to introduce new routines. Be kind. Change is hard on everyone, pets included. Don’t be afraid to include a treat or a toy to soften the impact of routine change, to reward new desired behaviours, and to provide a happy distraction from the stresses of new schedules and daily activities. Toys and treats are a healthy and fun distraction for pets, just as they are for humans. Be consistent. You are the center of your pets world. Once you begin to establish your new routine, reward and recognize your pet for their good behaviour.

Friends, Darren and I wanted to take a moment and update all of you, our amazing customers. We have had many reach out over the last week to see how we are doing and to see if we are keeping healthy and safe. ~ Thank you for all of the messages. Over the last week we have been working with our guests families as they rebooked flights or drove home early from their holidays before it was too late to do so. We remained open, for these families to arrange to have there fur babie...s picked up upon their return. As of a few days ago Darren and I made a very hard decision, that it was time to temporally close the Lodge. As of this afternoon our last guest was picked up. Our doors are now closed, and our hearts are heavy. With the announcement today of all Non-Essential business having to close, it made this post a little easier to write. We are all in this together friends. For those of you who are home for the next little bit, please take this time to surround yourself with the love of your family. For those of you who are on the front line and are not able to stay home safe with your families, THANK YOU for all that you are doing. Together we will get through this. We are sending so much love and light to all of you. Stay healthy and safe. See you all again soon. Love from the Watson Family 4 Paws Pet Lodge P.S. Darren and I are having our 1st official pyjama day in 6 years tomorrow. (Pic’s may follow)

*****WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT******* 28 December 2019 - We are expecting freezing rain over the next 24 hours. Keep pets in mind when severe weather stri...kes. Please bring pets indoors, including strays. Also be careful when walking pets during freezing rain periods, it is not uncommon for slip and falls to happen, causing injury to owners and also resulting in animals running away. Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm, dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure yours always wears ID tags. Thoroughly wipe off your dog's legs and stomach when he comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice. He can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws, and his paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice. Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. Own a short-haired breed? Consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. Keep pets indoors, especially if they are sensitive to the cold weather due to age, illness or breed type. Please check fences, gates and doors. Please ensure that everything is properly secure and not damaged. Look for garbage that may have been blown into the yard that could upset their stomach. Also, some pets are very afraid of wind and may attempt to jump or flee. Please keep your pets on a leash during this type of weather. Also be prepared for potential power outages and ensuring you have proper supplies in the home, including flashlights, batteries, water, etc. Let's keep our pets safe!
