THIS IS THE ANNOUNCEMENT YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR: after 11 years of managing the Eagle Mountain Key Program, the City of Coquitlam is passing the torch for maintenance and stewardship of this area to the Four Wheel Drive Association of BC! Under the direction of Recreation Sites and Trails BC, the 4WDABC will be managing the Eagle Mountain trail network for the foreseeable future. PHASE ONE ACCESS WILL BE OPENED SOON FOR GRANDFATHERED BLUETOOTH KEYHOLDERS ONLY. If you h...ave held an Eagle Bluetooth key in the past, watch for the announcement! PHASE TWO EXPANDED ACCESS FOR NEW KEYHOLDERS IS STILL UNDER NEGOTIATION. PLEASE BE PATIENT AS WE HAMMER OUT THE FINAL DETAILS. These trails are part of a sensitive ecological area whose stakeholders include the Cities of Coquitlam and Port Moody, three hatcheries (Noons, Mossom, and Hoy/Scott Creek), Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Recreation Sites & Trails BC, BC Hydro, BC Parks, TORCA Moutain Bike Club, Eagle Mountain Moto Club, and Metro Vancouver Water Services - suffice to say, a lot of different groups have an interest in the wellbeing of the area. In exchange for continued access, stakeholders have asked 4x4 user volume be restricted. In order to keep traffic manageable, and minimize impact to the surrounding environment, RSTBC has approved access for 4WDABC members, with a $53/year fee per keyholder. 100% of these funds will go toward the ongoing care of the area, including infrastructure repair and upgrades, runoff mitigation, trail maintenance, equipment operation, and management of the key program itself. In accordance with these goals, RSTBC has agreed to the following requirements for keyholders: - Applicants must have a minimum 33 tire size or 12" ground clearance. - All gate accesses will be logged and tracked via the Bluetooth key. - Keyholders are required to re-lock the gate after passing through. - Keyholders may take guests along but will be responsible for their conduct. - Surveillance cameras are in use to monitor traffic levels. THIS IS THE PERFECT TIME TO ENSURE YOUR MEMBERSHIP IS UP TO DATE! If you're a current or past member, please login to your account at www.4wdabc.ca to make sure you're current. If you're not already a member, what are you waiting for? Sign up now at www.4wdabc.ca/how-to-join This is a major achievement for the 4WDABC as it goes several steps beyond the typical rec site maintenance agreement and is a prime opportunity for wheelers to show multiple levels of government the positive impact we can have in the backcountry, right here in an urban setting. Taking on the key program itself gives us an avenue to potentially gain access to other currently-gated areas as well. What kind of radio should I get for the trails? It’s one of the most common questions we get and the short answer is, it depends. There are so many different types available, each with its own purpose, strengths, and drawbacks. Each purpose requires its own specific type of hardware, and in many cases, specific licensing. Ultimately your decision should start with what you want to use it for: communication in a group? Long range? Staying in touch with other industrial tr...Continue reading

The following infographic comes to us from the Lillooet Regional Invasive Species Society - a reminder when you're coming home from the trails, to check your vehicle for possible invasive plants that you might be dragging back with you. People tend to think of things like "seaweed being carried between water bodies on boats" when they hear "invasive species", but the reality is that there are all sorts of plants and animals that can cause problems when moved to an environment they're not native to - that includes being carried on your 4x4 when going to, coming from, or travelling between the trails. Be sure to check out LRISS's page and/or website (www.lriss.ca) for articles on identifying invasives and mitigating their spread.

CSM SPOTLIGHT: Power Tap Power Systems LTD Power Tap Power Systems LTD is a Canadian manufacturer and provider of 12/24v plug & play power distribution equipment for automobiles, marine vehicles and more! Traditionally, relays are used to switch higher power loads in vehicles. They are prone to many different kinds of stress problems. Power Tap Power Systems throws tradition to the curb side, in favor of solid state components that will not give up on you!... When relays are used, they require a separate signal cable run into the cab of your vehicle for a switch, as well as a power, a ground, and power cable to your accessory under the hood which creates quite the mess. The switch you end up using in your cab also requires power. We make this easier for customers by providing a single communication cable that is run into the cab, and this same cable also provides power to our switch controller. So after install of our system, all you need to do is hook your new accessory to our system, and that is it! It is ready to use from that point forward. The Tap-10 is air-tight, has 10 channels each with a max amperage of 30a, and our systems total available amperage is 100a. It is compatible with 12/24v power systems, and comes with a limited lifetime warranty for our customer. If you have any quesitons, please email us at [email protected] and we will be more then happy to help you configure this system for your vehicle. Airing down... (Winter/Snow Edition) By Richard Hiltz NOTE: This is about OFF-ROAD driving in DEEP (think 3foot+) snow. It is not about driving down the highw...ay in a foot of snow in your smart car. SEE GRAPHIC FOR AN EXAMPLE OF THE DIFFERENCE AIRING DOWN MAKES: We air down in the summer to increase our traction on loose dirt and rocks but also to smooth out the rough and bumpy trails. We often air down to 15 pounds or so for these summer rides. However, on winter snow runs we may air down considerably more. OK...a LOT more. On our trail ride this weekend, we had a good number of people new to deep snow wheeling. That is, wheeling in/on 2-3-5 feet or more of snow. Most often, our greatest challenge in helping these new people with the skills to do this is getting people to lower their tire pressure enough to allow them to ride on top of the snow. Cutting through is fine for a foot of snow, but 3 or more feet and you need to be on top. Note: This technique is great for packable (think: good snowball type snow) snow but is not as effective, though still far better than full air pressure, in powder. Let’s face it; we all grew up being told that having your tire pressure below 30 pounds or so will result in some kind of tire catastrophe. And here you are being told to lower your pressure much, MUCH lower than 30 pounds. Just to be clear, while bead locks are nice to have, very few of us have them so I am speaking about using pretty much standard, everyday wheels, and off-road-ready tires though some combinations are better than others. Of course, we are not talking about running these ultra-low pressures on paved roads or at any kind of normal road speeds. We are only talking about driving deep snow-covered trails so think more like 10 to 15 mph is at the very TOP of the speed scale. Eventually, on this last trip, I was down to 4.5 pounds of air. That is as low as I go with my tires and only for deep snow. You may find that 6 pounds of air is very good in most circumstances. Not too high and not too low. You can’t go fast and you cannot run on hard ground or pavement at these pressures but for running on top of several feet of snow at low speeds, it is great. Those still up at 10, 15 or 20 pounds were barely able to move, for the most part, but I was able to move pretty freely. It's nothing magic. As the graphic shows, the amount of tire tread on the ground increases by about 70% or more just when dropping from 40 to 15 pounds. You can imagine how much more it changes when you drop even lower. How much you need to lower will change with snow conditions. Deep powder requires different techniques than snow-ball type snow. A bit of practice with proper techniques will get you a lot farther than most would imagine and it can be great winter fun. There is a little more to this technique than just lowering your tire pressure so as with most things concerning serious off-roading, I highly suggest you only try this when accompanied by some experienced 4-wheelers. They can help make sure your tire and wheel combination is appropriate and that you have help should something not go as planned. Truthfully, while lowering your pressure WILL increase traction, there are a number of additional driving techniques that need to be used in conjunction to achieve the best result. Don’t forget a compressor so you can air back up before getting on the pavement. (Choosing a good compressor is a whole different write-up) Wheel Safe! Richard

This is only due to COVID restrictions and its not permanent. In the near future there will be some openings of the gate but for the time being it will be left closed due to the large groups gathering in the area. If any groups or gatherings of any sort beyond a small group are formed, they will be removed and charged by the local authorities for violating COVID restrictions. I am posting this so people understand how to treat the area and so that we can respect the rules we have to live with right now and have continued use of the area throughout the winter. Specifically, the bypass before the gate has NOT been dug out by an excavator, but that is what will happen if the rules are not adhered to.

Good morning, all. A member asked us to share this with everyone: When youre travelling the backcountry in ranchland, please remember that youre in open range territory and crown land is often leased by ranches for grazing. Fences and gates arent always there to block access, but to control the movement of livestock, and need to be respected as such. That doesnt mean you cant go through; for the most part, if a gate isnt locked or displaying signage restricting access, ...youre allowed to pass. However, remember the rule: LEAVE GATES THE WAY YOU FIND THEM. If a gate is closed, close it again after passing through. If its open, assume its open for a reason. This member noted that someone had left a gate open on his land near the Coquihalla, allowing several head of cattle to escape and wander close to the highway - that could have been disastrous for both cows and cars.

Please help me to welcome our newest Corporate Sustaining Member! Power Tap Power Systems LTD Power Tap Power Systems LTD is a Canadian manufacturer and provider of 12/24v plug & play power distribution equipment for automobiles, marine vehicles and more! ... Traditionally, relays are used to switch higher power loads in vehicles. They are prone to many different kinds of stress problems. Power Tap Power Systems throws tradition to the curb side, in favor of solid state components that will not give up on you! If you have any quesitons, please email us at [email protected] and we will be more then happy to help you configure this system for your vehicle Be sure to give them some online love: https://thepowertap.ca ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Members, to take advantage of the generosity of our CSMs download your PDF or screenshot your proof of membership: https://www.4wdabc.ca/ar/using-your-virtual-membership-card Want to become a member? We received this message today from a new member of our Facebook group, wanting to know how to get the word out about looking after our shared rec sites. I cant think of a better way to do it than in his own words: "Hi. I just joined this group. I was hanging out at Chehalis Lake on Sunday, keeping cool with my wife and my dog in the water. I decided to go for a walk with my dog, exploring the beach and made my way up to the campsites on a trail on the west side of the campg...round. I was shocked by what I found and cant believe people would do something like this. In the campsite beside the most southwest corner side, there was a fire blazing away and there was nobody around anywhere. The people put their garbage in the fire put, including a tent and put wood on top of it and left. "Im not saying that it was anyone in this group, but I saw the signs that say that volunteers from this group maintain the campground. "Having read the rules for this Facebook group and the part about public shaming, I dont want to do that. Is there something that can be done to let people know about the potential for forest fires when leaving fires unattended. Maybe a post by the admin for this group. Also maybe about taking home their garbage to dispose of it properly instead of burning it. "It just made me angry to see that someone would think that its ok to do something like this, especially on one of the hottest days of the year, in a bit of a dry spell. Please help me let people know that this is not ok. "Its actions like this that wont keep our public lands public." Remember that all our rec sites (listed at https://www.4wdabc.ca/cpages/about-us), are designated "User Maintained" and while we do perform scheduled work at several of them in the form of repairs, brushing, painting, etc., it falls to ALL backcountry users to do their part: pack out your own garbage (and maybe a little extra), make sure your fires are completely out (even in winter - its the law)... leave no trace, or better yet, leave a place better than you found it. Thanks for the timely reminder, Jim.

As you can see below, everyone enjoys the latest issue, even if theyre just starting to read! Wed love to get a new edition out as soon as we can, but that depends on one thing: YOUR STORIES. We cant make a magazine without content, and that content comes from all of you. Tell us about your adventures in BCs amazing backcountry - crawling, mud...ding, overlanding, breaking, fixing, travelling, camping, learning... we want to hear it! Even if you dont fancy yourself a writer, just imagine youre telling a story to your buddies around a campfire, then type it out and send it to [email protected] If youre including pictures (everyone loves pictures), please be sure to send originals whenever possible - photos downloaded from Facebook and phone screenshots dont look good in print. Ahhh back to the city and Im missing the cabin life already (dont miss the crappy internet though). Guess Ill get my brain back into it: this weeks draw for the "19 Days of COVID" is a full set of Custom Georeferenced Maps/Overlays for Avenza, Gaia Premium, or Locus Maps, by Mason Robert at Top Notch Nav (value $130). These are offline GPS-ready files for your device with rec sites, resource roads, private land, FN boundaries, cutblocks, provincial parks and more, create...d and maintained by a registered GIS professional with years of experience generating maps for industry in BC. Guys, I bought the complete set for Locus (a little under 8GB) and it gives me amazing full offline maps for almost all of BC, easily on par with BRMBs maps and typically more accurate since it draws on BC Government data sources. And the best part, just about the entire province of BC is downloaded on my phone and ready to go - no more downloading bits and pieces and hoping I get the full area Im planning to visit! The winner of this draw will be added to the Top Notch Nav email list for free map updates and newly added areas. Watch for the draw this Friday evening or Saturday morning, depending on when I have a moment. If youre heading into the backcountry this summer, please remember that many small communities are still not welcoming visitors, or offering limited access to outsiders, and plan your routes and stops accordingly. The BC Assembly of First Nations has created a list of those member FNs that have restricted public access (https://www.fnlcemergency.ca//band-and-community-closure-l), so travellers know what areas to avoid. Because many cant be found on standard maps (like Go...ogle Maps), BCAFN also has a map of their member communities (https://www.bcafn.ca/first-nations-bc/interactive-map) where you can look up those on the list, and theyve started to add that closure information to the map (its a work in progress though, so dont rely solely on the map for those details). Wed like to remind all our members that respect is core to our philosophy - respect for the land, respect for other users and user groups, and respect for local residents. Respect being a two-way street, please be mindful of those small towns that want to limit outside contact during these times. If you come to a roadblock and need to pass through to the other side, sometimes its as simple as just asking politely and letting your intentions to carry through without stopping be known. If you need to find a different route, it might work to just ask for that as well. These are trying times for all of us. Lets try to get through them together.
