Hiiiii! I’m back. And I thought I’d start this year off with a big bang of an announcement. . First let’s talk about the birth-death-rebirth cycle. This is the cycle we see everywhere in life, in the universe, in nature. . Spring gives way to summer gives way to fall gives way to winter which gives birth again to spring.... . Stars form, grow, die (often quite spectacularly), and give birth to new stars. . This is even true with childbirth. When a child is born, the Every Day person you were before having a child dies to make way for your Parent Self to be born. . When something new begins, something else ends. . This is the way. . Which brings me to the announcement Christine is bringing something new into the world: her very own private doula practice @femme_in_nest. It’s an incredibly beautiful new thing and I’m excited for her AND for what’s next. . But for that to happen, it means that her time with Five Elements is coming to an end. . As Rob Bell says, endings can either be divorces or graduations. For both Christine and I, this is a graduation. . Being in partnership with Christine for the last seven (!!) years has been an honor and a blessing. She has supported me, encouraged me, calmed me, and leant me her strength through all the ups and downs of business ownership. . She has taught me how to be ever more mindful, compassionate, and kind in my communication. She has taught me the value of good gift giving (which is her actual, literal super power). She has shown me how beneficial it is to surrender to where you're at Right Now, instead of always trying to stick with the original plan. . She is my doula soulmate and always will be, even if we’re no longer in official partnership. . So, for those Five Elements clients who are currently with Christine and I, we'll obviously continue to support you as planned. Considering the peace of mind and support that doulas bring during a time that is, for many folks, full of unknowns and uncertainty (more when you’re in the midst of a global pandemic!), it’s well worth it for the unlimited access to knowledgeable and skilled support you get in return. . You're investing in us to hold space for your transformation.... . Of course we'll show up and take care of you and feed you ice chips and wipe your brow and help you through contractions. That's actually just a small part of what we do. . Really, we’re completely and totally committed to your emotional care for the duration of your labor and postpartum. You'll likely be stressed and struggling at some point, as labor and postpartum will almost always provide unexpected hurdles to overcome. . We've been through this hundreds of times. Rest in that knowledge. We'll be there, with you, prioritizing and advocating for the plans we've made together, long before you have a single contraction. . If you are currently pregnant or have given birth within the last year, you will benefit from a Birth Art session. What does it really mean to "trust birth"? . "If you spend any time at all in 'natural' birthing communities someone will inevitably tell you that you can 'trust birth'. . Usually, what they're saying is that you can trust the process, the physiology of birth; you can trust that all of human evolution has brought us to a place where birth actually works quite well.... . So you don't need to be afraid. You can just trust birth. . And there is truth to that. Evolution is wise. As human mammals, we have evolved to birth well. . The vast majority of people who give birth, especially when provided with an emotionally safe, intimate, and connected birthing space, will give birth without complication or need for medical intervention. . There is value in trusting in birth. Learning about the birthing process, understanding how it works, the dance of your hormones, the slowing of your brain waves, the dropping down down down into the most ancient parts of your mammal brain - learning about all of this helps decrease your fear and increase your trust in the process. . What's it really like to support your lover? Part 3. . What is something you think is important for other partners and fathers-to-be to know about supporting their lover through labour and postpartum? . Sarah: I think other people should just know that nothing you do to support your person is wrong. Whatever they need, that is what you do.... . Remember that you need to be the tough person, that no matter what, how tired you are (or hungry) or how sore you are, they need you. Just be there. . But I would recommend eating some food throughout the day (listen to your doula when she tells you to eat), because I almost passed out afterwards. . Postpartum, I went to the store to get everything we would need. I made sure I gave her breaks (took the baby) so she could have baths, get sleep etc. I forced her to nap even when she was saying no. Cooking and keeping things tidy. . Help with breastfeeding, make padsicles. basically, do everything your partner needs. Also be supportive of her emotions! .
