"The opposite of addiction is connection" (Johann Hari). This understanding of addiction is now widely accepted, so where do people who have a alcohol or drug addiction find connections in a safe community? The answer to this question started back in 1935 in Akron, Ohio with the founding of the first therapeutic addiction community, Alcoholic Anonymous, (AA). Since 1935 addiction specific therapeutic communities have continued to grow and offer a sense of community to people ...isolated by addiction. AA, Al-Anon, NA, Nar-Anon, SMART, and Refuge Recovery are available around the world. These communities offer diversity and are accessible to anyone who wishes to participate. Connection is the opposite of addiction and these community based support networks allow people to recover in an environment of empathy. Who better to understand what it is like to live life with an addiction disorder than someone who shares the same condition. Our program does not rely entirely on these therapeutic communities, but we encourage our clients to try these options as a way to build supportive recovery connections and as a tool for aftercare relapse prevention.
There is a clear and distinct correlation between child trauma and drug and alcohol addiction. The traumatic incidents that we experience in our childhood very easily can, and often do, wind up following us into maturity creating a variety of long-term mental health issues that may cause us to self-medicate through excessive drinking or drug abuse. Treatment for childhood trauma-related addiction must simultaneously address the immediate medical and behavioral aspects of subs...tance abuse while providing targeted and in-depth treatment for the trauma-related triggers. This is accomplished through a comprehensive course of professional addiction treatment beginning with medically supervised detoxification, followed by focused and customized behavioral rehab. While each patient’s addiction care needs will vary according to their level of trauma and their scope of substance abuse, addressing both of these factors is crucial to successful management of stress and to sustaining recovery. More severe cases of co-occurring trauma and substance abuse may require a longer term treatment plan, whereas those with a more limited history can benefit from a brief treatment plan, 6 to 8 weeks.
