Today is #BellLetsTalk Day and let's work to end the stigma of mental health. Here is LGen Lanthier from an event in January 2020. "Personally it took me years... after my sixth tour to realize I had a problem, to accept that I needed to talk to someone, and to seek help from a mental health professional." See more

Frederick Hobson took on an advancing German army, on his own! Like so many of our WWI fallen heroes, not much is known about Frederick Hobson. He enlisted in 1...914 as a non-commissioned soldier, aged 43 years-old during his service. He etched his name into history at a little-known Battle of Hill 70. Canadians fought vigorously to capture the high ground outside of Lens, France. Although they managed to capture the hill, the Germans mounted a fierce counterattack on August 18, 1917. Frederick was tasked with keeping the hill in Canadian hands. The German advance however, was fierce and explosive. In those days, it was common to launch an artillery barrage prior to advancing your infantry soldiers. This is what happened to Frederick and his men. The German artillery killed all but Frederick and a few of his men. The one last machine gun operator was buried in the mud and that machine gun was their last hope to stop the advancing Germans. Frederick grabbed a shovel to dig out the operator and his gun, all while under enemy fire. Frederick then took control of the machine gun and fired on the Germans until it jammed. In this moment, Frederick could have retreated with his men, but he chose to stay and buy them more time. Frederick sprang to his feet and charged straight at the enemy with nothing more than his rifle. Firing until he was out of ammo, Hobson killed 14 Germans with his bayonet. After single handedly fighting the Germans, Frederick Hobson was finally killed by a barrage of gunfire. His death was not in vain, as he bought so much time that Canadian reinforcements soon arrived. Hobson was dead, but the hill remained in Canadian hands. For his sacrifice he was awarded the Victoria Cross -- the highest military honour. Frederick Hobson is a Canadian hero who took on the entire German army!
