Meet Chris Vail! He joined 6 almost a decade ago and each year has continued to hone his chops as both an engineer and composer. We sat down with CV to ask him a fast 10 in 10 questions on his time working in the industry: ... 1. At 6 you are an engineer/composer. Do you prefer one discipline over the other? No, one helps the other. I guess my identity is wrapped up in being a musician, but being a sound engineer is such a cool day job! 2. Do you ever face any compositional challenges? Because I’m more of a songwriter than a scorer, and I have no formal education, the challenge is to take the spec from the client and try to apply my own sound to it. 3. What is your favourite audio project that you have worked on to date and why? Bunny Phantom. Because it’s brilliant. 4. Do you have a preferred plug-in? I like whatever one gets me there fastest! 5. What is your instrument of choice when composing? Usually, the guitar because I know it best. 6. Did you go to school for audio engineering? I was self-taught, and colleagues fixed me over the course of the last 10 years. 7. What are you currently listening to? The new Julien Beillard solo album. He was in my favourite band, Wooden Stars, and then he kind of took a break for an extremely long time. Now he’s suddenly busting out album after album. I also can’t seem to shake the Kim Gordon record. 8. When did you start composing? I started composing during the initial Travel Alberta Remember To Breathe" campaign. I was able to apply the kind of music I had always listened to and a style I already knew how to play. 9. You have been a notable musician for many years. How do you set up your equipment on stage versus in the studio? On stage, it’s pedals and an amp. Nice and tidy. My studio is a tiny room with instruments all over the floor. I grab things to record as fast as I can and it’s very claustrophobic for most people to be in here. 10. As an audio engineer, what would you regard as your best skill? Probably timing. I like doing animation because comedic timing and instinct come into play and I think I have it.
