My family and I try to eat a mostly whole foods, plant-based diet. For us this means buying organic, non-GMO food products as much as possible; avoiding/minimizing refined foods, food additives (chemicals), extra sugars, etc.; and, focusing on fresh fruit, vegetables... and flour :) The modern industrial process for manufacturing flour leaves it mostly devoid of nutrients and fibre. (This includes unbleached flour.) It was a bit of process getting used to fresh wholegrain flour, but totally worth it in terms of taste and health benefits!! #freshflour #victoriabc #esquimalt #healthylifestyle
Adventures in Rye Bread Baking cont. Loaf #3 Baked a German rye bread this time: 70% organic rye, 30% organic red fife, 100% wholegrain deliciousness!... Yes. For all you discerning foodies out there, this busy parent did indeed overproof the loaf... Between rushing off to an appointment, dropping my kid off at school and trying to get the bread timing just right, something had to give! So the crumb isn’t consistent, but it’s still absolutely delicious. Dense without being stodgy Chewy and moist Very nutritious and high in fibre Keeps your blood sugar stable Keeps you full for ages Good for gluten-sensitive tummies

What’s for breakfast? I just milled some organic white wheat to make an Indian-style cracked wheat porridge called sweet daliya. It is reminiscent of rice pudding with warming spices, dried fruit, and nuts. Can be lightly sweetened with coconut sugar, jaggery (if you can find it) or even a homemade date paste. ... I wish I had taken a photo! I’ll make another batch this week and post again. If anyone wants to try it, send me a message and I’ll prepare the mix for you to make at home. It is easy to batch-cook and can be eaten warm or cold.
