A follower of the ARHS Baby Boomer page has shared these photos of the demolition of the original ARHS on Spring Street in 2003.

Many thanks to Mary Brown for sharing this photo of the ARHS Faculty for 1954-55. Although the picture was taken many years before Amherst Baby Boomers reached high school, a great number of the teachers we had are in the photo, and it is very interesting to see them years younger than we remember. They are as follows: Mrs MacIver, Miss Bryenton, Mrs Miller, Mrs Coates, Miss Slater, Dr and Mrs Hennessey, Mr Bissell, Norah Hogan (known to us as Mrs Gould of home ec), Mr MacSwain, Mr Hutchinson, Mr Legere, Mr Spinney and Mr Hennigar.

Many who attended Amherst Regional High School in the 1960s will remember Allison (Allie) Bickford, who died recently at the age of 67. His obituary follows. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Allison (Allie) Stewart Bickford, 67 of Truemanville, on Friday, June 7, 2019.... Born September 11, 1951 in East Amherst, Allie was the son of the late Stewart and Leota (Trueman) Bickford. Allie was a dedicated worker for many years having worked in various trades. As a young graduate from carpentry school, Allie spent time working in Labrador. His carpentry skills also led him to build his own home and garage. Allie spent the majority of his career self-employed. He ran a plumbing and heating business for several years and was a certified oil burner mechanic and was W.E.T.T. certified. He spent many years driving a log truck and hauled wood all over the Maritimes. In the later part of his career, Allie enjoyed working in the blueberry fields with G.E. Collins and Sons. Allie’s passion for working with his hands and being outdoors kept him busy with various hobbies. In more recent years he enjoyed refurbishing antique tractors and spending many hours in Fenwick collecting and boiling maple sap each spring. In addition to his building and driving skills, Allie was naturally gifted with mechanics, and he was always the first call for family and friends. Allie served as a volunteer fire fighter with the Truemanville Fire Department for 41 years. Allie will be lovingly remembered by his children, Andrew (Lori), Fenwick, Shawna (Greg) Doucette, Amherst, and Marcey (Mike) Norton, St. John’s, NL; his grandchildren, Hannah, Olivia, Ayden, Kyle, and Maxwell; his sister, Donna Bickford, Orleans, ON; his Aunt Mildred (Bickford) Klerowski, Cumberland, Rhode Island; his Mother-in-law, Christine (Allen) Gould, Amherst, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. In addition to his parents, Allie was recently predeceased by his wife, Linda (Gould) Bickford, and by a brother and sister in their infancy. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Truemanville Fire Hall on Saturday, June 15, 2019, from 1 4 p.m., 2389 Hwy 6, RR #4, Truemanville, NS, B4H 3Y2. In lieu of floral tributes, memorial contributions in Allie’s memory can be made to the Cumberland Hospice Society, Diabetes Canada or you can plant a tree in his memory by visiting alivingtribute.ca Online condolences and sharing of memories may be forwarded to the family via: www.campbellsamherst.ca or by visiting the Campbell's Funeral Home Facebook page.

Most people who attended ARHS in the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s will remember Jack Matthews of Pridham’s Books and China on Victoria Street in Amherst. Pridham's was a proud sponsor and supporter of the ARHS year book for many years. Jack died recently at the age of 87. His obituary follows: JOHN P. (JACK) MATTHEWS 1931-2019... Sadly, we announce the passing of John Pridham (Jack) Matthews, 87, of Amherst at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on February 13th, 2019 after a brief illness. Born in 1931 in Springhill, he was the son of the late John C. and Gladys (Pridham) Matthews. Following completion of a business program at Mount Allison University, Jack started work with this grandfather at Pridham’s Books and China and went on to operate the company successfully until his retirement in 1995. Jack was very involved in the community, through Town Council, as a councillor and deputy mayor, and various boards and committees that shared his dedication to community improvement. The Rotary Club of Amherst honored Jack with a Paul Harris Fellowship Award for his community service. First Baptist Church was a pillar of his life. He served in many capacities including leading the BYF youth group, as a Sunday School Teacher, in the operations of the church, and as a deacon. He was recently named an Honorary Deacon in honour of his service. Hockey was a passion for Jack. From coaching church hockey, to his involvement with the formation of the Amherst Junior Ramblers, he was a lifelong fan who seldom missed a game while able to attend. The cottage at Heather Beach was a favourite place, surrounded by friends and family. Jack is survived by his loving wife Jean (Burgess), whom he married 1955 as one of his better decisions, and his sons John and David (Rebecca Simpson), and grandchildren Evan, Emily, Quinn, and Marilla as well as nephew Cliff Burgess and niece Wendy Burgess and their families, and several cousins. Besides his parents, Jack was predeceased by a daughter Anne, and brothers-in-law David Burgess and Bruce Burgess. Family will welcome visitors on Friday February 15 from 6:00-8:00pm in the chapel of Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (902) 667-9906. Funeral service will take place on Saturday February 16 at 2:00pm at the First Baptist Church, Amherst, with reception to follow. In lieu of floral tributes, memorial contributions in Jack’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Cumberland Hospice Society or a charity of your choice.
