Don't let the sunshine fool you. The first frost and freezing temperatures have hit the farm. What this means: farm water is off, remaining harvests are once a week for weekend markets, farmstand is now open Sundays only 11-6. Also it's time to: roll up the irrigation lines, feed the soil for the next growing season, and plug away at the winter build projects. Rest: well that will come later but is on the horizon.

Happy first day of autumn. With rains hitting tomorrow I have spent a couple days cracking into as much soil as I can to get winter cover crop seeds started. I will be wrestling with the bcs beast again today and spreading a wonderful mix of seeds to protect the soil and add biomass for next year. Most times nature provides a great motivator to put in some physically demanding work. I continue to be accountable to this soil and feel a great conflict when I use the tiller. All is an opportunity for learning and I will be starting my transition to permaculture in a handful of beds next season. More exciting news for next growing season to come...

Don't normalize the Anthropocene, Be sure to tell your children that this is not normal. Make sure you tell yourself too, while you're at it. None of my family,... or the elders I've asked, have stories of times where the sky went dark due to fires or stories of times when we couldn't breathe. I know some old legends that talk of this, but that's in relation to volcanoes many many generations ago. Not an annual occurrence. Everyday I get more upset by this phrase "the new normal" I get that there is a virus and we have to change things to remain physically distant, and I am all for that. But, I want to make it clear that it's not normal. These fires, the droughts, and the virus, have all touched my forests, my community, and my family, no one has been safe. But, this is new, this didn't happen before. Even when I was a boy in the 80's the river was still clean and the cedars were still green. So I work hard to remind my kids that these things never happened before they were born. We may feel hopeless. We're shut inside, because outside there is toxic smoke and a deadly virus, by all means we're not happy. But we must remember not to normalize this. We must call our communities to action, we must make smarter choices, we must eat the rich and redistribute the wealth. End stage capitalism is killing not only our planet, but it's killing us. So take the advice of the forests and let us use this ash as fertilizer for a new chance to make things right. We've only got one planet, and we can't keep letting the few in power destroy our only home. #myexistenceisresistance #salishfire #cowichanstrong
