The amazing and world famous Sturgeon Nosed Canoe also known as the Kootenay Canoe that was used by the Sinixt, Ktunaxa and Kalispel Nations in the region. They... were designed to be able to navigate in bulrushes and turbulent waters. These beautiful canoes were made of White Pine bark, Birch bark, Pine sap and sewed with Cedar roots. The skill that went in to making them was incredible! Pictured is Elder Marion Ernst, Matriarch of the Louie Family.

We are pleased to announce that we’ve uploaded 56 new images to our historical photographs collection on the Montana Memory Project. These photos, taken between... the 1940s and the 1960s, were commissioned by the Great Northern Railway to promote tourism in Glacier and use of their concession services. Today these images provide a fascinating glimpse at how post-war tourists experienced Glacier National Park. You can see all of these promotional images (including those added last year) here: https://mtmemory.org//Great%20Northern%20Rai/field/creato/ This photo is an example of how the images sought to capture popular tourist activities in the park, such as posing for a photograph at the sign marking the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. Even though the sign has since changed, this spot is still a popular photo-op to this day. You will notice that many of these images have a strong color cast. Early color film was not stable, and like other film collections from this era, some of the original transparency film has lost most of its color as the dyes have faded (except for magenta). Other images from this era have exceptional color and remain very vivid. These images were taken using a more stable film (usually Kodachrome). You may wonder why we have not corrected these images using photo editing software. This was a deliberate decision. Digital copies of items from archival collections are generally not manipulated, as any correction, such as a change to the color balance, introduces assumptions that may not be accurate. Now that these images have been digitized, the original color transparencies have been carefully packaged and placed in cold storage to slow further deterioration. Funds from the federal Library Services and Technology Act, provided through the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Montana State Library Commission, were used to digitize the original transparencies. The Glacier National Park Conservancy also supported this project through their ongoing funding of the Glacier National Park archives and library staff. You can see all of the nearly 400 images in our historical photographs collection here: https://mtmemory.org/digital/collection/p16013coll83 #ThrowbackThursday
