9 Mile Legacy Brewing 24.11.2020

RAFIKI MOJA IPA As with many craft brewers, the Pacific Ocean and its brewing scenes have long been a place of inspiration for us and is a formative part of our journey. When our founders moved away from their careers, they spent a great deal of time on various Pacific coasts and benefited from the hospitality and generosity of friends.... Shawn was mainly down in Wellington, NZ (big shout out to @garageproject for taking in a scruffy backpacker those many years ago) and Garrett in Powell River, BC (equally big shout out to our friends Chloe and Cedric of @townsitebrewing for teaching Garrett commercial brewing and always being there as an understanding ear). We are eternally grateful for those early experiences and constantly looking at ways to pay it forward to other prospective brewers, as one does in this wonderful industry. This particular beer is named after the Moen family sailboat, moored in Lund, BC. The picture is of Rafiki Moja sailing into Desolation Sound. Many great trips on Rafiki (the boat) have been made over the years, each inspiring our version of a prairie craft brewery that punches with the best. People think it’s odd for prairie farmers to be drawn to sailing. We don’t agree - there are many similarities to navigating a sailboat on big water as there is in driving a combine on our open prairie. You have a big horizon, you set your line and you watch the skies for danger. We’ve spent many years sailing the South Saskatchewan and our sailing heritage is owed to Shawn’s Grandpa Ernie, who fell in love with the Pacific Ocean as a small boy. In terms of beer style, this is a classic West Coast IPA. Hop forward with hops sourced from the Pacific NW and the South Pacific. Lots of citrus/pine aroma and a sharp body bitterness. ABV is 6.1% and one sip will leave you dreaming of clear skies and smooth sailing. #yxe #craftbeer #SKCraftBeer #9MLCans See more

HYBRID VIGOUR The story of this brewery and its beer might be written in circumstantial ingenuity (happy little accidents!), though the same can be said about many beer styles. The original IPAs. California Common. ESB from the waters of Burton-upon-Trent. Hybrid was originally brewed for a @saskatoonjazzorchestra show. We’ve long loved malty marzen-style lagers but, as a tiny brewery, we had exactly zero tank capacity to lager. So this version was brewed with a clean ale... yeast and, damn, we liked how it tastes! The term hybrid vigour is one familiar to most farm kids - reflecting the vitality that plants and animals achieve when they are cross-bred. Different characteristics can occasionally produce a result that is greater than the sum of the parts. Doesn’t this story remind you of our province? So much of who we are result from circumstantial ingenuity - a smattering together of peoples a century ago that creates discomfort but also beauty, creativity and excellence. Happy accidents with all of their messiness and potential. The beer itself is an amber ale (let’s call it marzen-inspired). 5% ABV with 100% @makersmalt. Except caramel and light chocolate notes through a light red/coppery colour. We would have included an actual pronghorn with a six pack but, well, we’d have to catch one first. #yxe #craftbeer #SKCraftBeer #9MLCans See more

THE TICKET Affectionately known over the years as the Golden Ticket, The Ticket and the GT, our Belgian-style blonde has long been a crowd pleaser. This beer was a bit of an accidental success story for us. When we built the original nanobrewery, we had a party with all of our contractors, suppliers and advisors (back when big parties in cramped spaces were a thing).... This beer was a special cask made with a Belgian strain of yeast. We gave each of these folks a golden ticket to see the new brewery first and they drained the cask in a hurry! A huge vote of confidence before we had sold a drop of beer to the general public! It was not long before the Golden Ticket was a mainstay at many of our restaurant partners. It was so popular that it took up around 1/4 of our overall production. We never had enough beer to package it in anything other than kegs and keep our variety, but with the new brewery we sure do now! For those unfamiliar, this is a beer that is straw gold in colour, 4.7% ABV and finishes with a bit of Belgiany yeast character (yes that’s a technical term). And it tastes darn good in a can! #yxe #craftbeer #SKCraftBeer #9MLCans See more

YER FAVOURITES Very excited to launch three of your favourite beer into cans - Golden Ticket, Hybrid Vigour and Rafiki Moja. Available in the taproom this weekend and at our retail partners next week. Our decision to expand our operations to a second, larger location wasn’t totally about economic growth. I mean, of course we think there is opportunity - we see a bright future for well made beer in SK! But in other respects, it was also about a return to our nano roots.... Wait - you grow to get small again?!?! We started in 2015 as a teeny tiny nanobrewery. Likely the smallest commercial brewery to ever exist in the province, brewing 100L at a time. We made that old kit work hard, brewing around 55 different beer and 551 brew cycles in a year and a half. Variety was the name of the game and that became part of the 9ML experience. As things grew, it became tougher to push creativity. These three beer became very popular - so popular that we’ve never packaged them! We were obviously still a nano in scale, but each week saw at least one of these beer in our tanks. Our ability to create new beer had been limited by the challenges of our growth. We are very excited to be able to share these beer with you in cans. They taste fantastic and will now be shared with more people. But just as importantly, our little nanobrewery on 20th will be able to get back to pushing the envelope on what beer can be. Nothing is ever fast at 9ML. We were very deliberate about much of this project - can size, cardboard carriers, how to visually interpret each beer and its story. As we worked on our project, we saw many other breweries launch cans as we played catchup. More on this thinking to come. This journey started as two friends who wanted to make great beer and impact their community in a meaningful way. There have since been many hands building 9ML. We hope that you look at these cans and think about the many ways you’ve contributed to our growth as brewery. Together we do great things and so much in this province is built from many peoples’ strength. #yxe #craftbeer #SKCraftBeer #riversdaleyxe See more

We close each Remembrance Day at 9ML, as service for our country touches each of our families. We are eternally grateful for the ultimate sacrifice paid by those young men and women over the years - an ongoing sacrifice that continues in many cases upon return. We commit to passing this lesson to future generations in hopes that they can avoid similar sacrifice.... #LestWeForget See more
