Tonight is the live event industry's day of visibility, coordinated by #LightUpLive. One hour after sundown, hundreds of venues and buildings will light their exteriors red to raise awareness for an industry that is still dark and will be one of the last to recover. #support #live #arts #culture ..... this is our Sanctuary with the #TorQ Percussion Ensemble ..... photo courtesy of Conor McSweeny
The Music Gallery returns with X AVANT XV - TRANSMISSIONS. Strong programming including Thin Edge New Music Collective, Bonjay's Alanna Stewart with an original documentary-style conversation 'Simma' that gathers Jamaican-Canadian artists, a co-curation with Göteborg Art Sounds, and much more. And - to close out the fest - the Leanne Simpson Trio + Mingjia Chen, Chris Pruden, Julian Anderson-Bowes will be playing a live streamed concert in the Sanctuary of 918 Bathurst, albeit with no audience. We're thrilled to have our friends at Music Gallery back.
A huge congratulations to David Dacks for his new position as Executive Director of The Music Gallery. Lovely, devoted, and a true joy to work with as one of the biggest partners and supporters here at 918.
Happening LIVE right now - URGNT Slavic Music Meet. Keep your eyes peeled for stunning performances from , including one filmed at 918 Bathurst with Teo Milea, from 11:30AM EST onward!
As one of our first forays into music since our soft re-opening, 918 is proud to be a featured venue at URGNT Slavic Music Meet, a one day international showcase summit focussed entirely on Eastern European music by the incredible folks at URGNT. It's happening September 9th, starting at 10AM EST. Composer Teo Milea performed on a beautiful sunny day in our Sanctuary, filling the room with his gorgeous, glowing piano playing. With the help Global Music Month and partners from across Eastern Europe and North America alike (notably the Ukrainian Festival and The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recordings), URGNT have been able to pull together an incredible lineup or artists, an international round table and a keynote from a visionary producer and artistic director running one of the most successful conferences on the planet.
Some very exciting happenings on the horizon. Stay tuned. Thanks to URGNT for their creativity and care in these times, and Teo Milea for his artistry. We missed this, too.
#TBT to Moskitto BAR performing at 918 thanks to our pals at Sofar Sounds Toronto. Beautiful performance! They're playing tonight at Dovercourt Park at 6pm for a lovely socially distanced concert.
Gorgeous footage from Social Growl, who brought a Winter Workshop & Creation Lab for dancers back in January of 2019. What it really forefronts is the possibility in our space - calm, focus, and creative energy, to create something truly unique. It also features stunning music from the inimitable Blunt Chunks. A cool initiative from one of our friends! COVID has hit the performing arts sector particularly hard, and the folks behind Liquor Donuts want to help. They're creating a special vinyl compilation called 33.3 to support artists in this difficult time. 33.3 is a triple-disc vinyl record compilation to showcase and support local artists. Here's how it works: 33.3 is accepting submissions for original songs from Ontario and BC-based musicians. Their team of curators will selec...t 33 songs that will be included on the final record, and each artist selected will get $999 for their song. There will be one compilation featuring BC artists and one featuring Ontario artists. Applications and pre-sales are live now at http://33dot3.ca/
Happening live right now and watch along with us - 'Palatable for Who?' via Global Toronto, featuring Nick Dourado, Alanna Stuart, and Tarun Nayar, and moderated by Chaka V. Grier. A discussion on the roles of gatekeepers, the inherent barriers created by capitalist structures, and the possibility of an equitable and inclusive sector that no longer exploits Black and Brown narratives. https://globaltoronto.neme.tv/watch/78-globaltoronto-day-3
One of the more interesting and unique livestreams we've seen in awhile. Alphabet of Wrongdoing (Daniela Gesundheit, Johnny Spence) performed as psychedelic avatars for an all digital concert with IMVU, singing traditional hebrew prayers above divine ambient tones. They were originally set to perform at 918 this year, presented by The Music Gallery - and it was wonderful to hear what could have been.... You can watch the full performance here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/689430470
Here's an exciting online program from our friends at York Region Arts Council. Apply by August 16th!
Really strong short list by Polaris Music Prize this year, including Lido Pimienta and Witch Prophet who have performed at 918 Bathurst! Congratulations to all of the nominees. If you haven't heard these albums yet - you need to.
