On October 10, 1970, James Taylor’s Fire and Rain cracked the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, ushering in a period in music that became known as the singer-s...ongwriter era. Jimmy remembers the first time hearing this sing in the radio, he said, I knew it would never be the same after that. This guy was a singer AND a song writer and he was really good at both. Written by Mr. Taylor of course, Fire and Rain was the first single from Sweet Baby James, Taylor’s second album and his first for Warner Brothers Records. Carole King played piano on Sweet Baby James, and her stage career as a solo performer began when, as a member of James’ band, she agreed to open for him during a residency at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. Happy 75th Birthday today to José Feliciano, the Puerto Rican born musician whose stellar and sophisticated guitar work and impassioned vocals were first discov...ered in the venues of New York’s Greenwich Village. RCA’s Jack Somer signed him after seeing Jose at Gerde’s Folk City. Today we'll share a superb version of The Doors' "Light My Fire" -written by Jim Morrison, Robby Krieger, John Densmore, and Ray Manzarek of course-- with Daryl Hall performing alongside Mr. Feliciano. A gifted arranger and interpreter as well as a songwriter, Jose’s version of Jimmy Webb’s By The Time I get To Phoenix displays the depth of his talents in those areas, but those two strengths are just the foundation of his iconic version of Light My Fire, to which he would add intricate guitar work and impassioned vocals.
