Ursula Pflug reads from her new short story collection, Seeds and Other Stories. Ursula Pflug’s stories are the kind you want to carry around with you for those days when it feels like you’re living in a strange and incomprehensible world; her stories will make you feel less alone. They are wondrous and unique little creatures that desire nothing more than to play fetch with your weirdest dreams. They are wild inventions built of words and sentences that dig into your psyche and send back reports about all you never knew of the world. They are sly and joyous, scary and entrancing, profound, unsettling, amusing, and utterlyperfectly!unique. Matthew Cheney, Hudson Prize winning author of Blood: Stories

Fun! 'An Interview with Burlesque Sensation Wanda Wiggles!' (from Heather Babcock, Author's "Filthy Sugar"). Check out the full "interview" at the link c/o Heather's blog 'Meet Me at the Soda Fountain' (The bee's knees of #1920s and #1930s film and pop culture)! #burlesque #FeministFiction #WorkingClassHistory #books 'Brazen and busty, Wanda Wiggles, the star of Filthy Sugar, has taken the burlesque world by a storm! She’s been described by the Underwood bangers as both a v...oluptuous dream sweeter than a whipped cream strawberry sundae and a Vengeful Vamp. Here at the Soda Fountain, we thought it was high time to sit down with the rebellious redhead herself. So we put on our best negligee, broke out the rotary dial telephone and gave Ms. Wiggles a call on the horn. Join us below as we discuss everything from burlesque to brassieres and bathtub gin with the infamous hoofer!' https://meetmeatthesodafountain.home.blog//an-interview-w/

Fantastic new review of "Filthy Sugar" by Heather Babcock, Author, with thanks to Bonnie DeMoss and Historical Novel Society! Full review at the link! #FemLitCan #CanLit #FeministFiction #HistoricalFiction #WorkingClassHistory #Burlesque #books 'This is an extremely sensual work of art with very mature themes exquisitely written by Heather Babcock. The characters are real and raw. Wanda’s loves and losses are palpable and so clearly mirrored in the choices she makes. Babcock’s writing skill is evident, and the way she uses ordinary objects, such as a billboard or a bottle of milk, to express extreme emotions or the desperation of the time is very effective.' https://historicalnovelsociety.org/reviews/filthy-sugar/

Gianna Patriarca reads from her new poetry book, "To the Men Who Write Goodbye Letters." To The Men Who Write Goodbye Letters is the work of an artist at the top of her game. In this elegantly crafted collection of poems, Patriarca has tapped into one of poetry’s most magical powers, its ability to sweeten the tragic and make it palatable to the human heart. Even when the poet sings of suicide and death, there is gentle comfort in the lyrical flow of the voice and its loving attention to the simple and ordinary details surrounding even the most sorrowful events. Luciano Iacobelli, author of Book of Disorders and Dolor Midnight

TONIGHT! Book launch discussion for "Early Days, Early Dancers: Early Years of the National Ballet" edited by #JocelynTerellAllen. Online c/o DTRC / CRTD - Dancer Transition Resource Centre: 6:00-8:00pm! #FemLitCan #biography #ballet #NationalBallet #books The National Ballet of Canada. Special discount on books until midnight, October 14: 20% off with coupon code: earlydays20 order books here: https://www.inanna.ca/product/early-days-early-dancers/ Foreword by Karen Kain; A...fterword by Veronica Tennant. Early Days, Early Dancers documents the first decade of the National Ballet, focusing on the dancers of the 1950s, especially principal dancers Lois Smith, David Adams, Angela Leigh, Donald Mahler, and Celia Franca, herself a dancer and later the Company’s Artistic Director. With an enthusiastic foreword by Karen Kain, and a moving afterword by Veronica Tenant, the book includes pieces by twenty-two dancers, plus memorial tributes to dancers who have passed away. Contributions explore the dancer’s journey through St. Lawrence Hall, summer school, rehearsal, and life on tour, as well as life after a career in dance. Portraits includes comments by the dancers on such figures as Celia Franca, Betty Oliphant, and Kay Ambrose among others, and memorial tributes to those dance figures who have died are written by well-known writers contemporaries such as Michal Crabbe, John Fraser, Vanessa Harwood, and Veronica Tenant. These memories of the Company’s early dancers provide a unique impression of the origins of the National Ballet, and the history of dance in Canada, and highlight the way the present dances on the shoulders of those who have gone before. Jocelyn Terell Allen became a dancer with the National Ballet Company in 1956 at the age of sixteen. She danced for the first time, as a member of the corps de ballet, in the Carter-Baron Amphitheatre in Washington, DC., studied dance in New York and London as a member of the Company, and became a principal dancer in the fall of 1963. She danced for half her life and then a series of injuries forced her to have to adjust to life without dance. She enrolled in York University as a mature student and subsequently completed a Master’s degree in English at the University of Toronto. In later years, she was privileged to sit on the boards of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre, or DTRC, and Peggy Baker Dance Projects. She married Peter Allen, had three sons and now has six grandchildren. She continues to enjoy attending ballet, theatre and the arts, and she loves to write. https://www.gifttool.com/registrar/ShowEventDetails
