I wanted to do one more post on dyslexia because there are certain autistic profiles that tend to mask it. . One of those profiles is an intellectual disability.... It is often assumed that reading struggles are related to the intellectual disability, but a child can also have dyslexia at the same time as an intellectual disability. An assessment is needed to find out if dyslexia is an issue. . Another autistic profile that masks dyslexia is average to above average IQ and a photographic memory, or just very good visual memory. People with that type of memory memorize all words as sight words, i.e. they read all words as if there were logos instead of sounding them out and matching letters to sounds. A person can read fluently, but reading will be much more effortful than it should be. Because of the higher effort, fewer mental resources will be available for comprehension, and the reading process will be tiresome. And they will have some of the other challenges that I listed. . I have seen more than one student with excellent grades struggling with undiagnosed dyslexia, and I have worked out the signs that I am sharing here. As a parent or a teacher, these can tip you off that there is a reading issue in a child who seems to read well and gets good grades. . The good news is that students who struggle with reading skills are eligible for specialized reading instruction even if their grades are good. Reading is considered to be an academic end goal in itself, a skill that a student is expected to learn in school. In college and workplace, you can receive accommodations for dyslexia even if you can manage without them. Accommodations will save you energy and stress. See more

"For many years I pitched science shows to large science networks and was unsuccessful. I would receive the feedback that 'the majority of our audience is male,... so we just don't know if they'd relate to a female host.' But last year, Netflix picked up our science show, Emily's Wonder Lab. I filmed the entire thing 9 months pregnant. So there is now a female-led science show on the biggest streaming platform in the world hosted by a pregnant woman - available world wide. I'm just...so incredibly proud that my daughter will be able to watch this someday. When I was studying to become an engineer, I was one of 2 or 3 women in classrooms of 50 men. I'm hoping shows like this help change that demographic for her generation." -- Emily Calandrelli, #EngineerWeek For playsets for kids who want to imagine themselves as scientists, we recommend the Primary Science Deluxe Lab Set for ages 3 to 6 (https://www.amightygirl.com/primary-science-deluxe-lab-set), GeoSafari Jr. Talking Microscope for ages 3 to 5 (https://www.amightygirl.com/talking-microscope), and STEM Jr. Wonder Lab for ages 2 to 7 (https://www.amightygirl.com/stem-jr-wonder-lab) For older kids who to try conducting real chemistry experiments at home, we recommend the Beaker Creatures Alien Experiment Lab for ages 5 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/beaker-creatures-alien-experime), Color Chemistry Lab Set for ages 7 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/color-chemistry), and Ooze Labs Chemistry Station for ages 8 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/ooze-labs) For a fun book of at-home science projects - that includes snapshots of 25 famous scientists, half of whom are women - we highly recommend "The Kitchen Pantry Scientist: Chemistry for Kids" for ages 7 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/kitchen-pantry-scientist For more science kits, toys, and games to encourage your Mighty Girl's love of science, you can find options for every age in our blog post "Top Science Toys and Kits for Mighty Girls" at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=10528 And, for books for all ages about trailblazing female scientists, visit our blog post, "Ignite Her Curiosity: Books to Inspire Science-Loving Mighty Girls," at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=13914
