Three tips by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association: 1. Use both shoulder straps. Using one side causes lower and upper back pain, results in strains to the shoulder and neck. The good strap is soft, lets arms free, has 2 inches width. 2. Don’t carry EVERYTHING. Make sure to prioritize enough to carry minimum needed weight. Don't carry heavy backpacks. Take care to pay attention to what weight your children carry. A good ratio is 15% of your own weight. ... 3. Fit backpack to person, not vice-versa. Make sure it is not oversized ‘to carry more’. The shoulder straps should fit comfortably and not dig into the shoulder or arm, allowing the arms to move freely. The bottom of the pack should rest in the contour of the lower back. The pack should sit evenly in the middle of the back, not sag down toward the buttocks. #AMEDPhysio
