Is this movement bad for your back? Can this damage your discs? No.. A lot of physiotherapists, doctors, orthopaedic surgeons, and the general public have to ...change their beliefs about the spine. People with degenerative discs have been told that they can’t bend their back, lift heavy and do manual work. There are a lot of examples of people who have gone back to doing the very things they’re being told they can’t do. There is a lot of fear about the structure of the spine. They have been told to be careful with their backs and have the fear to do harm. We know that fear is a huge driver of abnormal pain behaviour. A shift in beliefs has to happen within the medical, physiotherapy profession and in the general public. We can trust our back and shouldn't be feared. It is a robust, strong structure. Often with disabling back pain, the motor systems are overactive, hypersensitive. The muscles are guarding the back too much. That can be driven by habits of movements, habits of posture, fear, anxiety, stress, or just the presence of pain and you developed a protective guarding response. In this video prof. Dr. Peter O’Sullivan explains more about this problem and tells about his Cognitive Functional Therapy approach, which shows great results for patients with chronic low back pain: https://youtu.be/ySJ5O2NnnuE This is a video from a list on the Trust me, I'm a "Physiotherapist" Youtube channel. Check out the other video's of Peter O'Sullivan and the other lists, filled with great content! Share this post with all your collegues, doctors, and other health care professionals.. Everybody should see this!

Open access (ie. Free & full) paper in BMJ Open - a systematic review of the evidence for manual therapy for unsettled infants. (NB: note the careful avoidance ...of the term 'colic' .) Results found that there was moderate strength evidence for the effectiveness of manual therapy on: reduction in crying time (favourable: 1.27 hours per day), sleep (inconclusive), parentchild relations (inconclusive) and global improvement (no effect). The risk of reported adverse events was low: seven non-serious events per 1000 infants exposed to manual therapy and 110 per 1000 in those not exposed. In other words for otherwise healthy but unsettled infants, manual therapy can help to reduce crying time slightly, even if its mechanism of action is unclear, & is relatively safe. What's the difference between an Osteopath, Physiotherapist and a Chiropractor? Here is a short summary for each of the professions...
Running does not cause osteoarthritis in your knees and hips! :) There are significantly LOWER rates of arthritis in marathon runners than the general populatio...n! That is the conclusion from this very important study done by Ponzio et al. (2017): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29342063 "CONCLUSIONS: Age, family history, and surgical history independently predicted an increased risk for hip and knee arthritis in active marathoners, although there was no correlation with running history. In our cohort, the arthritis rate of active marathoners was below that of the general U.S." Interesting right? :) Thanks for sharing Adam Meakins aka The Sports Physio!
This study demonstrates a good prognosis for people with disc bulges, concluding that 2/3rds of disc bulges will heal on their own within the matter of a few months.
This is a great illustration to demonstrate that "findings" on scans are not necessarily linked to pain. Degenerative changes identified on scans are usually normal adaptations that occur in healthy people. Pain is complex and is usually due to a number of factors, involving the dynamic interplay between a person's: anatomy, psychology and social experiences. Osteopathy works with the body, to enable improvements in function and quality of movement; ultimately allowing for a reduction the pain experience.
