It's been just over a week since the big Gretzky Rookie sale, so I'm going back to 2013 and my "greatest video hit" for today's post. There's no denying that the 1979-80 OPC Wayne Gretzky Rookie Card is one of the most iconic hockey cards of all time, it's also one of the most valuable sports cards in existence in its highest graded form, but, as this video will show, it's not one of the rarest hockey cards out there. So maybe I’m the last to know about it, but Iron Mike Tyson and Captain Hook Roy Jones Jr. are going to "rumble" on November 28, 2020 in LA. The bout, an 8 round exhibition match, which is part is Mike Tyson’s newly formed Legends Only League is presumably the first in a series of matchups of retired pro boxers. As for the cardboard, while boxing cards were never fully embraced by the collecting community, these two cards are still fairly sought after by casual and hard...core boxing fans alike. The Tyson is 1991 Ringlords and it is the rarer No Sample Stamp version, and the Jones Jr. is his 1991 Kayo Rookie Card. Boxing cards will probably never enjoy the same mainstream popularity as baseball (or even hockey cards), but these cards may become even more collectible after the big fight! With all the hysteria surrounding the Heritage Auction million dollar Wayne Gretzky rookie card sale, I thought I would post this video showing my own "non-million dollar" Gretzky RC. This video is also a follow up to my PSA grades reveal from last week. If you saw that video, (spoiler alert), you know that one of the cards came back as not meeting the minimum size requirements, or in other words, trimmed. In this video, I take a look at the Gretzky RC and square it up against some commons from the same year. The results, well, you be the judge, but it looks pretty good to me! Congrats to AL Rookie of the Year, Kyle Lewis. Here’s Kyle’s Topps Heritage 2020 RC in the style of the much loved (and very condition sensitive) 71 Topps Baseball Set. While this is Kyle’s Heritage RC, his earliest card is from the 2016 Bowman Draft set. In addition, collectors can find quite a few other Lewis cards from 2020, including the Topps base set, Topps Chrome, Topps Dynasty, and Panini National Treasures, (and there’s probably more I don’t know about). While I’m ha...nding out kudos, I might as well also congratulate Brewer’s reliever Devin Williams for winning NL Rookie of the Year. The Dodgers looked pretty good last night in Game 1 of the World Series vs the Tampa Bay Rays. After watching some of the highlights from the first game, I think the question on some people's minds is, who will be the MVP of this World Series? With a dominating performance on Wednesday night, starter Clayton Kershaw is a strong early contender for MVP. His 6 inning, eight strikeout, two hit performance, was more than enough to get the W in the 8-3 trouncing of the Rays. Right... fielder Mookie Betts combined speed on the base paths with power at the plate to score two runs on two hits, including a solo home run. Last but not least, center fielder Cody Bellinger knocked out a mammoth homer to give the Dodgers their first two runs of the game, and saved at least one run on defense with a huge catch at the wall. After one game, all three of these players are looking like good potential candidates for the MVP, but there's still a lot of baseball left in this series, and ultimately a big part of who gets the award is tied to who eventually wins the series. If the Rays show up for the rest of the series, and we start seeing some more outstanding play from Randy Arozarena, you might see another post from me on the Rays side! (As an aside, Kershaw probably has to get another win or at least be very strong out of the bullpen, to be a serious MVP candidate.) In 1992 (I know I say 1994 in the video) Future Trends released a 1972 Summit Series 20th Anniversary Card Set which featured Gold Swirl autographs from the players involved. One of the best autos from the set is from Hockey Hall of Famer Ken Dryden, who is a notoriously difficult signer. Watch as I go through this box to see if I can pull the elusive Dryden auto card! It was of course, on October 18, 1977, that Jackson belted 3 home runs in the 6th game of the World Series against the Dodgers, catapulting the Yankees to their first title in 15 years and earning him the nickname, "Mr. October". If you opened a pack of OPC hockey cards in 1973, you probably found one of these inside! These NHL team logo insert rings were meant to be instantly destroyed! Kids were supposed to punch the ring from the card backing and wear it around their finger. I guess my hand was a lot smaller 47 years ago! Happy Birthday to Teemu Selanne’s favourite linemate and Hockey Hall of Famer himself, Paul Kariya! Kariya was a highly touted prospect, and many hobbyists went crazy when his Upper Deck World Junior RC came out in 1992-93. While Paul played 15 seasons in the NHL and put up some respectable numbers when he was healthy, his career was marred by concussions which forced his eventual (early) retirement. Due to mass production in the early 90’s, Kariya’s rookie card never really ...appreciated much in value, but it’s still fun to look back on these cards, for nostalgia’s sake, if nothing else. As the 2020 NHL draft is underway, I thought it would be fun to look back on some notable draft day card issues, like the 1990-91 Upper Deck #356 and the 1990-91 Score Jaromir Jagr #428 rookie cards, both of which were extremely popular back in the early 90's. The Score Jagr RC was part of a subset rookie draft pick cards from that year which also included: Marty Brodeur, Owen Nolan, Mike Ricci, and the much ballyhooed Future Superstar, Eric Lindros. (Hobbyists only learned a... bit later on that the most desirable Jagr RC to have was the 1990-91 OPC Premier issue #50.) It was also on this day, October 7, 1990, that Jagr scored the first goal of his NHL career in his second NHL game as Pittsburgh won 7-4 over the New Jersey Devils.
