A small but mighty group gathered for the official Ground Breaking Ceremony for Civic 66 yesterday! Killam Apartment REIT (@killam.apartments) has started construction of a 169-unit apartment building located at the corner of Weber Street East and Scott Street in Downtown Kitchener. The building incorporates architectural elements inspired by the neighbouring heritage building, and green features including geothermal heating and cooling. Look for eye-catching moments at our Charlie West project! This pair of images capture the illusive qualities of light and shadow that come to life against concrete during construction! The perforated feature wall on the south façade incorporates an aerial view of Downtown Kitchener’s streetscape during the 1950s. The perforations are based on density and open space. During the day, the most active areas in DTK are cast onto the interior concrete via the sun’s rays. Sneak peak of the custom concrete formliner to be featured on the podium of Civic 66 in Kitchener! ABA worked closely with @stubbesprecast to create an artistic interpretation of the decorative detailing on the neighbouring heritage buildingand here’s the full-scale mock-up! Upon research of the existing office building on the site, its heritage value resides in elements relating to Modern architectural style including its cast-in-place concrete walls and decorative details.
