On #GivingTuesday consider Abbeyfield Lakefield https://www.abbeyfieldlakefield.ca/donate-now Abbeyfield's core mandate is to provide affordable accommodation and companionship for lonely elders within our local community. ... We are building an #Abbeyfield house in #Lakefield #SelwynTownship in which a small group of residents will live together. Rooms are private, but housekeeping and meals are provided by a small staff in the common living space. We are a non-profit, registered charity. House ownership and support are undertaken by community volunteers.
If you are looking for a way to help your neighbours avoid crowded places or to just check in on them feel free to print this out.

MEDIA RELEASE For Immediate Release July 16, 2020 Lakefield, ON - Abbeyfield House Society of Lakefield (AHSL) would like to clarify a possible misunderstanding regarding the location of the property that we were requesting Selwyn Council to consider for donation to our affordable housing project. ... We met with Selwyn Township staff in January 2020 to review a number of potential sites for our Abbeyfield home. Township staff provided the Official Plan (OP) designation of medium density residential for the property in question at 152 Queen St. in Lakefield. Based on that OP designation, staff indicated that residential development was appropriate and a project such as ours would be permitted on this property with a zoning amendment to residential type 3. With that information in hand, given the Townships designation for future residential development, AHSL decided to ask Council for consideration of a donation of said property. This property was never part of the generous Morris family donation and was never part of Isabel Morris Park. To be completely clear, if the property was designated parkland and part of Isabel Morris Park, AHSL would not have proceeded to ask Council for the donation. This property is sadly overgrown and has sat idle for at least 30 years with little access for public use. AHSL’s proposal included a green building and integrated walking paths to link the property to Isabel Morris Park so residents could enjoy this property while supporting affordable senior housing in our community. Given the Township OP designation for future residential development, we felt it would be a good location for our Abbeyfield home. AHSL's Board of Directors, and my personal appreciation goes to our Board Director Ron Black for his presentation to Selwyn Council. We were all very grateful when Ron decided to join our team a few months ago, and we look forward to a continued association, thank you Ron. Said Dewi Jones, founder and President of Abbeyfield House Society of Lakefield. We respect Councils decision and accept their offer of support to help AHSL find an alternate site for our new Abbeyfield house. We look forward to working cooperatively with township staff and elected Council moving forward. We trust this clarifies any misunderstandings there may have been about our transparent and honest intentions with respect to the property in question. As many of you may know, Abbeyfield Lakefield made a virtual presentation to Selwyn Township Council on July 14th for a donation of township owned property, on which to build an Abbeyfield retirement house. Unfortunately our request was denied. The Board of Directors are obviously very disappointed with this result, and will be resuming their search for a suitable building lot, of approximately 1 acre in size, preferably within the boundaries of Lakefield village. Any inform...ation pertaining to a suitable property, would be vey much appreciated. While a donation of land would be our first choice, we understand this may not be possible and we are fundraising to purchase the cost of such a property. #SpotlightonCouncil At last night's meeting, Selwyn Township Council received a presentation from the Abbeyfield House Society of Lakefield. AHSL asked Council ...to deem 152 Queen Street (owned by the Township) as surplus property and donate it to AHSL. Council decided against donating the property noting the need to retain the lands for future municipal needs and committed to supporting the continued search for lands.

Imagine an Abbeyfield House in every small community?
The first #AbbeyfieldHouse was founded in England in 1956 by retired British Major Richard Carr-Gomm, in response to the profound human loneliness he saw. Since then hundreds of Abbeyfield Houses have formed around the world. Abbeyfield Houses Society of Canada was established in 1985 with the first home in British Columbia. There are currently more than 20 Abbeyfield Houses across in Canada. Abbeyfield House Society of Lakefield was founded in 2016 by Lakefield resident Dew...i Jones. It was incorporated as a not-for-profit in May 2019 and became a Registered Charity at the end of 2019. The Board of Directors is now helping to bring Dewi’s dream of building an Abbeyfield House in Lakefield to reality. Abbeyfield House Society of Lakefield needs our neighbours and community leaders to let Selwyn Township Council know that you support this type of #affordable #housing in our village.
