AVOID RENTAL SCAMS How to Detect and Avoid Rental Scams? It has come to our attention that our photos and property address is being used by individuals misrepresenting themselves a landlord on behalf of our rental properties have offered fraudulent rental opportunities with the intent to steal personal information and/or solicit money from renters. Abbey Rentals is committed to help potential renters avoid being scammed.... All our rental listings can be found at www.abbeyrentals.ca Abbey Rentals directs potential renters to apply on our website at www.abbeyrentals.ca or in person at 710 Adelaide Street North (nearest intersection is Adelaide and Oxford) If prospective tenants request an application, Abbey Rentals agent will send a complete application via email. This email would include the agents’ title at an @abbeyrentals.ca email address. We will never contact a prospective tenant with an out of the country phone number nor would the property owner would contact a prospective tenant directly. Key pick up is always at our office located at 710 Adelaide Street North. We will never mail a key to any tenant who has been approved to move in to one of our units. Research average rent in the area. Any scam requires bait and rental rate that’s too good to be true is your first and major red flag. There’s such thing as an absolute steal when it comes to renting but if someone’s offering something that is a steal, unfortunately it’s more likely that something does not add up. The Invisible Property Owner. So, you like the listing that you saw. You contacted the owner of the property as you are ready to see the unit in person to ensure that this is a good fit for you. Yes, they got pictures of the property copied from our original add most likely with a lower amount. Photos of the unit can be lifted easily from our website or plainly faked. Make sure, whenever you’re renting a property you physically see the inside. If you’re renting a property from out of the City to move into for work or school have a trusted fried or colleague to check it out in person. What to do when you ran into a rental scam? Report, report report, report. Stay smart and happy renting! WE DO NOT ADVERTISE ON CRAIGSLIST.
