When you have a neurotypical child, you feel reasonably assured that class participation and decent study habits will result in good grades. These kids have close friends. They get invited to participate in social things like dances and weekend gatherings. They make the teams, auditioned organizations and clubs. But when you have a child who is neurodivergent, this is often not the case. Learning may take longer, both academically and socially. Despite their tremendous effort...s, results are often a fraction of their peers and social acceptance is fleeting, setting them up for painful comparisons and bitter frustration. Instead of a fun and fulfilling experience, school can become a breeding ground for depression and anxiety, and assignments a battle ground at home. It is exhausting for parent and child alike. This is the week of SPED (Special Education), Autism, Dyslexia, and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) awareness. For all the children who struggle every day to succeed in a world that does not recognize their gifts and talents, and for those who are walking beside them, please let this be a gentle reminder to be kind and accepting of ALL people. Recognize that the "playing field" is not always a level surface. Children who learn differently are not weird. They are merely gifted in ways that our society does not value enough. Yet they want what everyone else wants: To be accepted!! If you choose, please copy and paste this in honor of all children who are deemed "different". Our world would be far less beautiful without them.

Small steps lead to great progress!

We had such a wonderful time at our drive-by awards event yesterday! It was very different from our usual awards/bowling event but everyone adapted well and it... went very smoothly. We didn't have nearly as many attendees as usual, perhaps because of the chilly day or because of fears of COVID, or simply because of life being busy. Nonetheless, it was so much fun to celebrate with those who joined us at the event. If you haven't discovered it yet, make sure you take out the yellow coupon which you can trade it for skipping one set of Kumon homework! Students, keep up the excellent work. Parents (and extended family members), thank you for continuing to play such an important role in supporting your child's Kumon journey. Congratulations to all of you! To our awesome staff - you made this such a great party! Thank you!!! Here is a peek at our day. Don't forget to turn on the volume. You can also click on "Expand" to make the video larger. Enjoy!

I couldn’t agree more with Amy. Our students have adapted more quickly and easily than we expected. Parents have worked hard to ensure uninterrupted progress for their children. Thanks to a very dedicated staff, we have learned new platforms to deliver the programme and continue to come up with innovative ideas. Let’s all remember to always do our best! I must say I have been so proud of our Kumon students who have adapted to changes so quickly. Its been amazing to see.... Our fearless leader (who doesn't care for the term "boss", so here you go, Shirley ) has been so diligent in organizing everyone. The amazing thing to behold has been seeing how well the children adapt. They just do it. It just is. They make use of the tools at their disposal, such as zoom, and they run with it. I keep thinking - I would never have adapted like they have at their age - but that likely isn't true. Humans are amazing creatures and new and unusual circumstances such as these give us a chance to evolve and use our intelligent God given brains in ways we perhaps would never have imagined. Students today are learning to think outside the box - heck! Adults today are learning to think outside the box! And while some aspects of all of this are just plain.... sucky.... the reality is we've been given an opportunity to grow. In the end, we will be better for it. I'm happy to focus on that for a while.
