I hope everyone is doing ok in the current situation. I have started doing online classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7-8 pm using an app called Zoomus which is free to download and use. If you're interested let me know and I'll send you an invite. So far it has worked really well with lots of opportunity for individual feedback.
First online class went well tonight. Email me if you're interested in joining in.
A Successful Karate BC Junior Team Selection tournament yesterday. Congratulations to all of you that made the team. I enjoyed officiating and having a chance to practise with the new 2020 rules before I go to the Karate Canada Senior Nationals in Calgary this month.
Great night training at the dojo getting ready for the grading next week.
Class is cancelled tonight due to the current snow and risk of freezing rain later tonight. See you Tuesday.
Happy New Year! The GIKF (Gima Ha International Karatedo Federation-Canada) Summer Camp in Whistler BC Canada, July 17-19 (Friday night, all Day Saturday and Sunday) is well underway and we hope you will be interested in joining us for a great weekend of training, knowledge sharing, and friendship. We estimate that the cost for the training camp will $150 CDN per person. Whistler is a fantastic place to visit and you may want to plan on a few extra days to enjoy the activiti...es available there. This is open to all Shotokan Practitioners. So far, we have confirmed that Narumi sensei 8th dan - Kyoshi, will be attending to teach the katas Nijushiho and Sochin with their bunkai, amongst other things. Myself, Frank Mostad, Andrew Statz, all Rokudan and Ted Gosling (Godan) with GIKF, look forward to sharing our knowledge and experience. Also Steven Edwards (Godan) from England will be there to teach kata and kihon. Some possible seminar topics will be: kata with their bunkai, Tournament style kumite, realistic self defence fighting, knife defence, Funakoshi throwing techniques (especially those found within our kata), stand up grappling (sticky hands, partner flow drills, and jiu jitsu), and pressure point attacks. I’m also a Nidan and certified branch dojo instructor with Tesshinkan Ryukyu Kobudo so I hope to offer instruction in a variety of weapons depending on the interest expressed. If time permits, we might even have small tournament or demos from various groups. A dan grading is also an option if the interest is there. If possible, we may be a able to have a few sessions for the non karate members that come with your group, such as basic meditation, yoga, Jikiden Reiki etc. Once we know how many are coming and where the most interest lies, we will narrow down what we can fit in. I’m working with Kobayashi Hanshi on the english version of the new GIKF dan syllabus. This would be a good chance to clarify what is meant by the new syllabus. We hope that instructors from other countries, will be interested in sharing their knowledge and expertise as well. Please let me know ASAP if you are interested in joining us. I have a training facility booked at Whistler Secondary School. I need to make a deposit very soon to ensure we have enough accommodation in Whistler as this is a peak time in the area. Once I hear from you, I’ll send out the accommodation options. Hotels are not cheap, 2-300/night CDN because it’s a peak time of year for them. Some of the options are condos where you can put a number of people in together. Camping is also an option nearby. Paul Sexton GIKF Canada
Winter Training in Ojiya Japan with Kobayashi Hanshi's group!
Great end to the year at the dojo with a Potluck Dinner! 40 people came out on a wet and stormy night. Great food, grading certificates given out, a number of demos, young and old, and some games with pool noodles and sword fighting / ninja skills.
A few of the photos from an excellent grading tonight. Well done everyone! Regular training Tuesday and final dojo potluck party Thursday.

Our new instructor's uniforms arrived today from Japan with the name of our new association - Sekukan which means Earth Forever Dojo.
Great to be back at the dojo after a summer off!
