What should you look for to assess whether a youth is at risk of joining a gang? There’s a complex interplay between individual, relational, community, and societal factors that could make youths more at risk. These factors influence each other.... So, the PATHWAYS approach is multi-dimensional to evaluate the risk through all risk factors: - individual factors - family relationships - school / peer relationships - community influences - societal factors This approach is more likely to sustain prevention efforts overtime than any single intervention. National Center for Injury Prevention and Control & Division of Violence Prevention, 2020 Stay tuned on Facebook! Over the next several week, we explore the different types of risk factors and share more about our innovative PATHWAYS program. Meet our AbbyPD Gang Prevention Coordinator and Gang Intervention Team The Abbotsford Police Department Gang Prevention Coordinator, Harpreet Jhinjar, supports the PATHWAYS program through the community engagement and prevention pillars. The PATHWAYS program uses evidence-informed strategies to connect with youth and young adults identified as being at-risk for participation in gangs or other criminal activities. The PATHWAYS program aims to divert these individuals from the ...criminal lifestyle by providing services that address the underlying causes of the risk factors. The Gang Intervention Team (GIT) provides individualized support and resources to the youth who participate in the PATHWAYS program. These officers take a hands-on approach to work closely with the youth and help guide them towards more positive choices in life. The youth’s family is also encouraged to be an active participant in the process. The Gang Prevention Coordinator and GIT officers work cohesively to provide a more holistic approach to community engagement, prevention and interventions. The PATHWAYS program follows three guiding principles: 1. Mitigate risk factors and enhance protective factors. 2. Practice cultural responsiveness and ensure that gang prevention initiatives are responsive and inclusive of cultural communities. 3. Foster collaborations to maximize impact and build and strengthen partnerships at all levels. Research indicates that gang involvement evolves over time, and that those who do join gangs tend to have specific risk factors. The identification and understanding of these risk factors help us to determine where and how to focus our efforts. To learn more about PATHWAYS and its mandate, visit https://www.abbypd.ca/pathways. If you would like to make a referral to the PATHWAYS program, complete the referral form on the AbbyPD website under the Gang Strategy section https://www.abbypd.ca/pathways-referral

There are two important rules for entering an intersection controlled by a roundabout: 1. Before entering, look left and yield to all traffic in the roundabout coming towards you. 2. AbbyPD wishes our community a safe fall and Halloween season It’s Halloween! The AbbyPD will have extra resources on patrol this Halloween dealing with public safety concerns and ensuring the streets are kept safe for young trick-or-treaters. We receive a large increase in calls for service on Halloween, including a disproportionate number of calls related to fireworks and firecrackers, said Sgt Judy Bird. ... Here’s an important tip from police: please keep 9-1-1 reserved for emergencies only. For fireworks or firecrackers complaints, direct your calls to City of Abbotsford Bylaws at 604-751-4190 until 11pm on October 31st. Halloween can also be a nightmare on B.C.’s roads, according to ICBC. Please slow down and follow the rules of the road -especially between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., which is when most of our little ghosts and goblins will be trick-or-treating. For the kids, ICBC suggests they have bright costumes that fit well so they don’t trip on them, follow a safe route, trick-or-treat in groups, and follow the rules of the road. And for those of us with pets, many pets are not used to an increase in foot traffic, strangers at the door or fireworks, please keep your pets indoors- they are safer there. Have a fun and safe Halloween, everyone!

What to do when Traffic Signals are NOT working.... short and sweet- treat the intersection like a four-way-stop. The answer is D. Though A through C may ridiculous (and illegal), we have seen confused drivers proceeding dangerously through intersections controlled by traffic signals during power outages. This confusion at intersections can lead to frustration and dangerous driving. The first vehicle to come to a complete stop at the intersection goes first.... If two vehicles arrive and stop at the same time, the one on the right goes first. If two vehicles stop at the intersection at about the same time and are facing each other, the one making a left turn yields to the one going straight through. Otherwise, both vehicles proceed straight through at the same time. In all cases, yield to pedestrians. Before entering the intersection, be sure other approaching vehicles are following the rules and coming to a complete stop. By request... we bring you THIS PSA today. TOPIC- what to do when Traffic Signals are not working (we will give the answer later this afternoon). SCENARIO: It’s a stormy day and you approach a flashing red light while driving. As you get closer, it becomes clear it’s a traffic light controlled four-way intersection with a power outage or other mechanical failure. No yellow or green just red lights flashing in all directions. You... A) You’re running late for a very important date, then step on the gas. B) Approach the intersection slowly and stop only if you see another vehicle approach. C) Come to a complete stop, and WAIT for the power to come back on, giving you the green light to proceed. D) None of the above. (Thank you to @TranBC for the info)

Fall weather = darker mornings & gets dark earlier in the evenings ... Please turn on your headlights. Most vehicles have daytime running lights which are located at the front of the vehicle and will run while the motor is on. ... PROBLEM They are fairly dim & don't illuminate the road that well. SOLUTION Turn ON your headlights- which are brighter (making it easier for other vehicles to see you) & this also turns on your tail lights! Get home safely!
