I was standing in line at a Gas station yesterday evening. l was wearing a jacket with my logo on it so the man behind me starting telling me all about his dog, Its a conversation l am very familiar with and goes something like My dog is awesome, does really well on commands , that is until he/she gets distracted. So with that in mind l am posting for anyone who has that problem. All training starts with a dog being able to look at you, they have to find this very ...rewarding, if they do not think you are worth paying attention to then their thoughts will be elsewhere. You wont have to carry yummy food around with you for the rest of your dogs life to get their attention, but you will have to build a solid foundation for getting your dog to understand that paying attention to you has big pay offs. By pairing up the food reward with the word "yes" eventually that becomes the dogs reward, they become happy to work for the attention factor that comes from you.

NEW UPTOWN MANNERS CLASS starts on Saturday 6th November. This is a 5 week course for anyone who wants to give their dogs a new environment to practice their obedience skills in. Meet place is in the uptown area, we will then do a little bit of introducing a few manners skills that help dogs in the new environment , following this we will add a walk about with the dogs in the uptown area. Its a awesome opportunity for your dogs to get to see and experience new sights , sound...s and smells and be around other dogs in a supervised environment. The class time is 3.30-4.30pm. A sight rarely seen when you own a cattle dog, (in this case two cattle dogs). They are breed to be tough, hard working , fearless when herding cattle and have no time for rest when they have a job to do. Well thats just not the case for these two, after a hour of training in the "up town manners" class they slept all the way home. LOL

UPTOWN MANNERS CLASS. The weather was perfect for the first ever "uptown manners class". It was a challenge for all the new students as they absorbed so many new sights and sounds. (including the very large statue in the center of Queens square which caused a big distraction for Bisco at the start of the class. but with lots of treats and help from the other dogs he overcame his fear of this strange new object) . Looking forward to next week so i can see the dogs grow in confidence around all the new distractions.

PUPPY CLASS GRADUATION NIGHT. Another 7 weeks have come and gone so fast as i watched this little pups grow very quickly and was also very happy to see how quickly they absorbed all the new things they were being taught in class time and then demonstrated how much they could show of their new skills for a return of playtime and treats. It was with much sadness that yesterday i received a message about Harley who was to be graduating from Puppy class on that evening. Despite her young age she had passed away that afternoon. Understandably her family are in still in shock but wanted me to know how much she loved the playtime during the classes. I am sure everyone in the class is going to miss her fun personality , R.I.P little Harley.

A set of 7 classes which include a theory section, a introduction to basic commands and some very important social playtime with other pups of a similar age. I took this photo yesterday evening in class time as it was getting darker. When the students send me their registrations in for their dogs to attend class it includes section where they can give extra information about their dog that would be helpful for me to know about. Ummmm, I am thinking that Bogeys owners left out a bit of information about their dog personality after it gets dark, hahahaha.

A big "thumbs up" to these two dogs from the basic obedience groups from the Monday and Tuesday night.. We have been working on the "stay in your place training" and this week where starting to add some distance while they stayed in place. These two both struggled at first but then finally got the idea that staying in their "place" is actually a very rewarding experience. What cant be seen in the first photo is that though Audis ears are firmly back ,but her tail is consta...ntly swishing from side to side as she sits to wait for her treat reward. Nothing like a swishing tail to let me know that a dog thinks the training is actually a enjoyable situation to be in. A new BASIC OEDIENCE CLASS starts on Sunday 20th September . UPTOWN MANNERS CLASS.. starts Saturday 12th September at 2pm , held in a uptown location in Saint John. Are you looking to build on your dogs skills in a location where your dogs can experience lots of new real life distractions. ABC dog training has been busy putting together a working plan so that students can build on their present skills and add a few more that would be of benefit in distracting situations. Added to this would be a supervised group walk around the street...s of Saint John. This is a set of 5 classes, held each Saturday for a hour. We just finished a fun afternoon on on the agility equipment with Cash and Finn who missed their graduation agility class a month ago. They completed the equipment introduction with zero problems (including the full size A frame) and are now ready to move onto the skill handling class in October.

Puppy class "come command" stage two , with added distractions to see if the pups will find their owners more rewarding than the owners. LOL

The Wednesday evening 2nd puppy class practising a introduction to the "come command" and learning how important it is is to have a long line attached when you say the word to insure your pup will come to you every time.

WEDNESDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER. New puppy class. A set of 7 classes held on a Wednesday evening. For pups aged 3-5 months old. Classes include a theory night , introduction to basic commands and a very important puppy play socialization. cost is $115.00 plus hst. SUNDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER , 2-3pm. New Basic obedience class. A set of 10 classes covering, theory, loose leash walking, focus, sits, down, come , stay for both long and short distance. All commands are then proofed with supervised fun games to ensure both dog and owner do understand what they are being taught. For dogs of any age. Cost is $159.00 plus hst. UPTOWN MANNERS.. A chance for dogs to continue learning their skill sets in a new environment with many new distractions . Classes will be held in a uptown location and will include obedience skills and a chance to explore new places in a supervised group setting. A set of 5 classes held on a Saturday afternoon 2-3pm starting on 12th September. Cost is $90.00 plus hst. MONDAY 12TH OCTOBER.. Pre-agility class. A set of 8 classes for dogs aged 8 months and up to start a introduction into agility classes. This class is not on the equipment , its a class designed to build on many useful skills that are needed for handling dogs before they move onto the next set of classes which would be a introduction to the equipment. This class will also be repeated in January 2012 for anyone who cant do the October class. cost is $125.00 plus hst. THURSDAY 17th SEPTEMBER.. AGILITY SKILLS. For students who have already completed the pre-agility and introduction to the equipment class. Moving onto building more confidence with equipment and adding more handling skills so that dogs and their owners can learn to work together more confidence on the agility equipment. hahahah, in the past 13 years if anyone has ever boarded at dog at my kennels, done a class or private session with me, they will know this is 100 percent true.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN SEARCHING FOR A TRAINER RECOMENDATION.. I often see on many facebook posts people asking for recommendations for a dog trainer who does classes or private sessions. If you have only ever been to one trainer (after all most people only have one dog and only ever need to go once) then you would naturally recommend that trainer unless you had a bad experience in that class. So the bigger the training school and the more money they spend on google sponsored ...adverts the more people that will go to them. In general i find that about 50 percent of my students who register with me are refered to them by a friend who attended one of my classes, the rest are generally someone who found my bussiness on line. Thats good for me as it means that my previous students enjoyed by classes So with this in mind i though i would share what you should really be looking for when searching for a trainer who has both certifications and hands on experience. Yes do go to their facebook pages and bussiness sites so you can see past students recommendations and yes do watch the videos they post of past students while they make progress in the class. Included in this post is a dog who came to my boarding kennels for board and train. Every dog i train is different so i get plenty of hands on experience. I dont judge anyone that brings a dog to me , i am generally relieved thet decided to get some help as they have quickly learned that following you tube videos and taking a friends advise has usually lead to so much confusion that it is sending the dogs progress backward. The dog in the video was only here for a week so he isnt perfect yet, but what a change in such a short time when someone who really has the experience knows how to help. No prong collars, shcok collars etc where usued in the training, just lots of common sense, rewards , praise and playtime when he ofered a behavior i wanted to see repeated. One very impatient dog , giving me lots of hints that i need to stop chatting so that we can start on some fun training playtime on the equipment. LOL. This was her second hint, the first time she casually walked up the frame and picked up her rope toy that was resting on the top and then when that didnt work she just casually walked up and stood there looking at me.

ABC dog training has aded a very important addition to their puppy classes. The imprint stage of a dogs life happens in this timeframe of their young life. They need to have as many postive experiences as possible . they need to be safely exploring their environment so we helped them out by added some fun into class time. From watching the class i think the tunnel was one of the favorite new experiences . thank you Caroline for helping with Rocco. Rocco is a rescue that came with a dislocated hip and was abused . he was afraid of people and aggressive with dogs .... mostly due to pain . after surgery for his hip and healing Rocco started attending small dog social time in the winter . Jacqueline arranged a safe spot for Rocco to be near dogs but have safety for his hip as it healed. when he was ready we enrolled in obedience . by the end of the second class I was ready to give up. Rocco was constantly barking at other dogs and easily distracted. not an easy situation. but Caroline encouraged me to keep coming . Rocco began to immediately start learning after the 3rd class as Caroline had said he would. Rocco had spent most of his years in a crate in terrible conditions so he had no social skills or leash walking manners. hes accomplished so much and I can walk him now...he dosent walk me . his anxiety around dogs and people has greatly reduced. very happy I attended . thank you Caroline.
