Below is a repost from the Instagram account of @the_theory_police and I felt it was so well written, that it needs to be shared. I re-typed it myself, so any spelling or grammatical mistakes are my own. "Any fool can know. The point is to understand" - Albert Einstein ...Continue reading

Empty your cup... I got a call from a friend the other day asking about some pistol stuff. Ive know this cat for a while and hes a solid dude who performs well above average and is always looking at options to make himself and others better. We had a good discussion as hes getting into the Miniature Red Dot Sight (MRDS) game and he was asking for some direction. For me, it always comes down to objectives and application. Once we had determined his purpose, it was easy t...o talk options and steer him in the right direction... for him. What I respected was his stance on the matter. He said hey, you know more than me about this thing; can you give me some advice? I appreciated his honesty and told him my thoughts, just being one dude whos seen some things and whos been lucky enough to affect change in a positive way. But it got me thinking about Bruce Lee and other masters long before his time: Research your own experience; absorb what is useful, reject what is useless and add what is essentially your own. In todays world we tend to forget that its okay to not know everything. And even if you know some stuff, never be afraid to ask someone else just because they might have more information or had the chance to apply it differently. I rely on others all the time for things I dont know, and thankfully by being able to let go of my own preconceptions I have learned a thing or two. From there I can decide what works for me and what doesnt, and add my own opinions based on my operational experience. Who knew?! Wait... Bruce knew. And so did others long before his time. Maybe instead of talking, we should take time to listen now and then. Always Be Deliberate.

Its a bold strategy cotton, lets see if it pays off for em. Recently on a high risk firearms call, my partner dropped the subtle truth. People had been shot, patrol had done a great job locking down the scene and gathering witnesses... but offenders were still outstanding. As we rolled up I grabbed my carbine and helmet, when he looked at me and said without emotion no shoulders on the live gun call, eh? I stared at him thinking, dude... we do these all the time. Aint... nobody still around. But the obvious absurdity of my position made me laugh out loud. He was right. Blood was in the vehicle, casings were on the ground. And here I was not wanting to take 30 seconds to attach additional protection; shoulders, groin pro, and extra mags should it go to shit. I donned the gear and we patrolled around providing security while nothing eventful happened. But it could have. And if it did, I would have been a liability to my mates for when they had to drag my shot ass to cover. I am thankful for friends with dry humour. I am lucky for teammates who call bullshit. I am grateful to have known such quality men. Always Be Deliberate.

#datadriven For those familiar with this phrase, you know it comes from a core group of solid dudes who believe in... well, science! But lets not kid ourselves. We cant choose this mentality only when its convenient for us, such as when we want to back up some special project that were working on. It has to work when needed most.... When facing a choice of ultimate consequence, does this phrase apply? Most likely it does. If youre a cop about to get into a surprise duel; I hope you put the time in and got some numbers beforehand, and made yourself one of the hardest people to kill on the planet. But what if life decides to test your resolve? Will you revert to emotions or will you look at the numbers? Take a minute, sit down with pen and paper and just do the math. The choice is yours and that is what makes being human so damn incredible. But, when youre stuck between a rock and a hard place... look to science. Look to numbers. Look to data. Because some things are simply bigger than you. Always Be Deliberate.

To all those who have purchased and received new gear; please... stop. Stop placing untested kit on operational belts or other platforms without doing the work and examining it first. Stop spreading the word just to be one of the first to repost something that you feel will garner attention. ... I understand that we all want to be valued and that by sharing new information, we can improve performance in an arena which seconds matter more than most will ever understand. But please, be a professional. Test it first. Take your current platform and compare it with the proposed solution. Does it make a difference? Is it a positive improvement, or does it detract from what you are currently using? Put the time in. Do the math. And share your findings. Lets work together and raise the standard of performance. But also realize, that standards are subjective based on objectives and application. If it works for you, then fantastic. But if it doesnt, keep searching for what will. Do the work. Always be deliberate.

As is the norm post SHOT... people are reposting the wonders of certain pieces of gear, new techniques or various training topics. They are blindly applauding these things without actually evaluating the relevance for their own application and understanding. Be thankful for innovative products, detailed equipment reviews and thoughtful trainers that make you aware of things previously unknown. But after that, please do some work. Determine if X is viable for your specific... operations and if it is, figure out how to apply it accordingly. Once applied, determine how you can make others understand the benefits of X. And after that, think about what programs you can incorporate X into and how it will better serve your people to make them more efficient, capable etc. Chances are if youve seen information on X that so have a hundred others within your social circle. Dont just repost it. Add some context. Add a little experience. Add value to it. Just because things are trending doesnt mean they will work for your requirements. But then again, maybe they are worth looking at? Take the time. Do some work. Try not to be just a parrot.

No... but I served in a company of heroes. Well over a decade ago, I became one of the luckiest people on the planet. It wasnt because of my education, my career path or even my personal choices. It was because of those that I was fortunate enough to meet along the way and ultimately become true friends with. Whether faith, determination or just happenstance; call it what you will. I wont waste my time trying to decipher how I came to know such great men, but rather I s...hall focus on the humbling experience that it has been to know them. Brothers can be those who make you want to do better, who push you beyond your limits and who help you become something more than you used to be. And when all is said and done, they are the ones that would lay down their lives for yours. I have met some fantastic humans, learned from great teachers, created amazing friendships and work with the best of men; all who enrich my life and give purpose to what I do and why I do it. But to my brothers (and sister)... thank you. Thanks for being what I didnt know I needed, what I didnt know I wanted and for who you inspired me to become. It is all of you, who made me the man I am today. And I love you for it.

Recently on a high-risk firearms incident when all was said and done, I was speaking with a patrolman that I knew and said Well, stay deadly. He looked at me with wide eyes and said Thank you! I fucking hate it when people say stay safe. We shook hands and I watched him walk away holding his carbine ready for the next call for service. Then I got to thinking... stay safe? Why do we always say that? Is it to instil some sense of camaraderie to the capable few, or to giv...e false hope to the many we know in need of it? Or have we just heard it said a thousand times and repeat it without even really understanding why? Although I appreciate the sentiment behind the phrase; I want the men and women that serve to make it home, to see their families, to hug their children. But I cant say be safe in good conscience. Why? Because their occupation is inherently dangerous. They are expected to put themselves in situations that are unsafe on a regular basis as part of their job description. Thats like saying to a professional boxer Dont get punched in the face. So of course; do your best, do what is right and dont place yourself in harms way needlessly. But when you answer the call, dont be safe. Be deadly. Be dangerous. Be capable and willing to fulfill your sworn duties and protect those that cannot protect themselves. That doesnt mean just sit there and be a meat shield for no reason. It means use your training, tools and experience to stop bad people from doing bad things. But be deliberate at doing it. Professional violence when called upon. If you cant be safe... be fucking deadly.

Recently I was able to partake in some competitive shooting events within my agency. Both pistol and carbine, these competitions allow you to voluntarily take part and let your results be publicly consumable with the chance of recognition and reward. Im often asked by some of the dudes I work with, Why bother? You lose either way. What they mean is that by working in a specialty unit, there is no chance of a successful outcome. Either the people you compete against will s...ay Of course he did good, he trains all the time. Or if you fuck it up, theyll say I thought those guys had to be good to work there?! But guess what? It doesnt matter what they say. Why? Because its not about them, its about me. Its about showing up cold, and laying it on the line. Just like in real life. Performance on demand. Whether I was the first to lose or the last to finish, it shouldnt matter to anyone else. But it should matter to me. Because I know how much or how little I trained. I know how tired or how injured I was. I know whether or not I gamed it or gave it my honest best. And thats what matters. In the 1993 classic film, Doc Holliday said say when. I wish that kind of confidence for all the men and women I serve with, because if anyone has skin in the game, its them. So when you have the opportunity to compete against other meat eaters, do it. But do it for you. Win. Lose. Succeed. Fail. Learn. - Always Be Deliberate.
