As we step into a holiday season unlike any other, to cap off a year unlike any other, let us remember the love, kindness, strength, and resilience that was woven into these days, helping to sustain us. During this holiday season, we wish you moments of peace amid the challenges, connection with family and friends even if you can’t be together, the warmth of cherished memories from holidays past, and an abundance of good health and good cheer. Our office will close Monday, December 21 and re-open on Monday, January 4. While closed, donations may be made via our website or by mail. The enduring vision of the Foundation’s founding members was evident in recent funding for the Aberdeen Hospital. Donor generosity and decades of effective financial stewardship are directly impacting health care in our community, with $1.5 million for critical new medical equipment. Pictured is Radiologist Dr. Daniel Petrie with the new CT Scanner that will mean faster scans, lower radiation dosage, and enhanced imaging capabilities. Instead of calling 811, people can now do the self-assessment online at https://covid-self-assessment.novascotia.ca. It will reduce the wait time to be screened for testing from 12 hours to about 10 minutes. If the assessment determines that a person requires a test, the Nova Scotia Health Authority or IWK Health Centre will call within 24 to 48 hours to book an appointment. 811 will continue to take calls from people who cannot access the online tool or who wish to speak with a nurse about their symptoms.

Wayne Vacheresse credited supportive health care teams and the Aberdeen Hospital Music Therapy program as valuable aids in his difficult journey with ALS. The health care system he noted was exceptional in meeting physical needs and music therapy invaluable in all other areas of his wellbeing. Sadly, the world lost Wayne on July 12, 2020. We are grateful that he was willing to share his story and that the Music Therapy program allowed him to leave a very unique legacy for his family. A new building in the Town of Pictou will be the new home to several local Nova Scotia Health services and programs. The Pictou West Health Centre opens this week to patients of the Pictou West Collaborative Practice and Dr. Randy Burrill’s family medicine practice, which are relocating to the new building from Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital in Pictou. The new health centre will also house satellite offices for the One Door Chronic Disease Management Centre, Senior’s Cli...nic and Continuing Care. Located at 300 West River Rd. on the town’s roundabout, the 4,829 square-foot, one-storey building offers a combination of office, collaborative team space and clinical exam room space including a minor procedure room. The fully accessible building has ample parking on site for patients and staff. Patients of each service will be notified of the new location when booking their appointment. Phone numbers for each program will not change. Nova Scotia Health is leasing the building from Parsons Investment Limited.

Do you wonder how you can get a better night’s sleep? Have you thought about the connection between what you eat and how you feel? Do you want to improve your strength but are not sure where to start? Are you looking for effective strategies to parent your teenager? Nova Scotia Health is offering a variety of online wellness programs this fall for adults of all ages on healthy eating, physical activity, mental wellness, parenting, and reducing one’s health risks. All of the s...essions are free for anyone who lives within the province; a valid Nova Scotia health card is required to register. We have 30 wellness sessions that are offered at different times throughout the day, including some that are offered over the noon hour or in the evening, said Tina McPhee, team lead, Community Health Teams, Nova Scotia Health. We’ve been offering wellness sessions online since April, and have had really good participation so far. Our sessions are a great way for Nova Scotians to try something new from the comfort of their own home, and to learn new skills or information to help them improve or maintain their health. The wellness sessions are offered online in a friendly group setting using Zoom for Healthcare, and are facilitated by health care professionals, including dietitians, physiotherapists, social workers, and occupational therapists. Most sessions are an hour in length, and generally consist of a presentation, followed by a moderated group discussion. I’ve learned something from each of the sessions that I have done so far [and] it was easy to join the group online, said a participant. I really liked that I could participate from home at a time that worked for me. I’ve been recommending these sessions to my friends. Some of the online sessions consist of a series, such as Your Way to Wellness, which is a six-week program that helps people with ongoing health conditions, such as diabetes or arthritis, to overcome daily challenges, take action, and live a healthy life. This particular program is led by trained volunteers, most of whom have chronic conditions themselves. Visit www.HealthyNovaScotia.ca to see a full list of the online wellness sessions available this fall and to register online.
