MUSIC THERAPY LEGACY PROJECTS Patients don’t often get a chance to talk about themselves or their lives, says Aberdeen Hospital, Music Therapist, Kelsey MacDo...nald. Legacy projects are an opportunity for them to capture and record meaningful thoughts, emotions and stories which loved ones can cherish. I think sometimes we forget that physical health is just one piece of the human puzzle and we lose sight of the importance of mental and spiritual health. The projects provide an opportunity to take a pause from the medical side of a diagnosis and focus on a patient’s overall well-being. Being able to address significant challenges and focusing on something positive in their journey, can be cathartic and introspective for patients. A legacy project can evoke feelings of validation and can also provide a sense of peace knowing that their personal legacy will be cherished by loved ones after they are gone. Completing a legacy project can be as important for the patient as it is for their loved ones. The patient is able to reflect on positive memories, favourite songs, and hard-earned successes while the family is able to hear stories they might not have had the opportunity to enjoy before. It opens up meaningful conversation between loved ones about the journey the patient has experienced in their life. Loved ones who have received a legacy project cannot express the comfort they experience, having that special piece made just for them. Photo Caption: Music therapy at the Aberdeen Hospital provides patients and their families with end of life care and support. Therapy can involve relaxation, evoking reminiscent conversation, anxiety reduction, and legacy projects which may include song writing, audio recordings and memory bears. The memory bear project consists of creating a message up to 30 seconds that would be recorded by the patient and put into the teddy bear of their choosing. Wayne Vacheresse credited supportive health care teams and the Aberdeen Hospital Music Therapy program as valuable aids in his difficult journey with ALS. The h...ealth care system he noted was exceptional in meeting physical needs and music therapy invaluable in all other areas of his wellbeing. Sadly, the world lost Wayne on July 12, 2020. We are grateful that he was willing to share his story and that the Music Therapy program allowed him to leave a very unique legacy for his family. Life can be tough. It’s okay for everyone including men to reach out and ask for help. That’s why we’ve launched a free, confidential Men’s Helpline through... 211. It’s a new service available 24/7 for adult men (18 years and older) who have concerns about their emotional well-being, safety, safety of others, and/or who are experiencing crisis. September is Suicide Prevention Month a time to remind Nova Scotians that anyone can connect with 211 for navigation and supports, and to be linked with local community resources.
