Your donation to https://poppyboxabnwt.com helps those in your local community, like S.B. My husband joined the military in 1977 and stayed around for 23 years to collect a little pension. In 2018 he started to show troubling changes in his cognitive capability and in 2019 he was hospitalized. During his stay, it was ultimately determined that his dementia would require him to enter long term care and a search for placement started. Needless to say, it was a shock. Whil...e waiting for a residence, hospital fees were accruing and our income was minimal at best. We had no emergency funds to drawn upon, no nest-egg and no family to fall back on when all else failed. Ours was strictly a cheque-to-cheque existence so we were already well-acquainted with stress. I raised our situation with a friend who got me in touch with a local Branch Service Officer. Through it all, the Royal Canadian Legion and its Poppy Fund covered the daily fees applied during my husbands stay at the hospital. They arranged visits from the Branch and provided me with gift cards to tie me over until things stabilized and Veterans Affairs could be brought into the picture. To this day, I have never forgotten the genuine sense of relief and feeling of weight being removed from our lives. I cannot thank the Legion enough for what it does for our veterans and our families. - S.B. See more
