Planning on heading out for a Manitoba staycation this Friday? Be extra careful! According to MPI data, Fridays are the deadliest day of every long weekend of... the average one person killed and almost 100 others injured each four-day holiday stretch, 35 per cent of these tragedies happen on Fridays. To stay as safe as possible, avoid high-risk driving behaviours by following our top 5 road safety tips: #1. Don’t text and drive. It’s against the law and attracts five demerits on the Driver Safety Rating scale. More than one in four fatal crashes in Manitoba are related to distracted driving. #2. Don’t drive while impaired by drugs or alcohol. Driving drunk or high slows reaction time and continues to be a major contributor to fatal collisions in Manitoba. It’s also a Criminal offence that can result in severe penalties including jail time. #3. Don’t speed. Speeding at-fault drivers are responsible for deaths of 21 people each year and injure more than 700 others. #4. Buckle up. People not using their seatbelts are 33 times more likely to be killed and two times more likely to be seriously injured in a collision than people using their seatbelt. #5. Slow down in construction zones. Watch for signs as the speed limit will be lower in a construction zone. Follow directions. The flag person helps control the flow of traffic. Follow their directions, including slowing down or stopping. Learn more: https://www.mpi.mb.ca/Pages/nr2020july30.aspx.

Even though COVID-19 has contributed to reduced traffic volumes on Manitoba roads, far too many drivers are travelling at dangerous speeds, risking the lives of... others on our roadways. Over the last three months April to June a total of 148 speed-related Serious Driving Offences (SDOs) have been reported to MPI, a 60 per cent increase compared to the same time frame in 2019 when 93 SDOs were reported. Dangerous driving not only makes our roads unsafe, it has significant consequences for the person behind the wheel, too. Learn more: https://www.mpi.mb.ca/Pages/nr2020july22.aspx.

With revised processes to ensure your safety, we are resuming road tests for Classes 2-5 for customers who had previously scheduled appointments that were cance...lled due to COVID-19. There are approximately 4,300 (!) customers that had scheduled road tests. If you had a test cancelled due to COVID-19: You’ll be hearing from us! We're in the process of calling all customers who had previously booked tests, in order of their original test dates, to reschedule your appointments. Customers whose tests were scheduled at our Main Street location, which is currently operating as a COVID-19 testing site, will be offered appointments at alternate locations. If you’re looking to book a new test: Stay tuned! We will announce here and on our website when booking will be reopened for new appointments and we ask customers not to contact us to book new tests until we do so. We can’t schedule them yet! We have also updated road test procedures during COVID-19 for the protection of both our customers and our staff. You can find all the details of what you’ll need to do prior to your road test here: https://www.mpi.mb.ca/covid19drivingtests. You’ll find future updates on driver testing availability in Manitoba on our dedicated COVID-19 page, under Licensing & ID: https://www.mpi.mb.ca/Pages/covid-19-information.aspx.
