Reiterating that Electrical work should be completed by a "qualified electrician." (I come across installations like this all the time-fire hazards )

Energy Efficient Bulbs Cause Anxiety, Migraines, and Even Cancer. Reasons to Go Back To Incandescent Bulbs 1. Energy saving bulbs contain mercury. Murcury ia a potent neurotoxin that is especially dangerous to children and pregnant women. It is especially toxic to the brain, the nervous system, the liver and the kidneys. It can also damage the cardiovascular, immune and reproductive systems. It can lead lead to tremors, anxiety, insomnia, memory loss, headaches, cancer and Al...zheimers . 2. Energy saving bulbs can cause cancer. A new study performed by by Peter Braun at Berlin Germanys Alab Laboratory found these light bulbs contain poisonous carcinogens that could cause cancer: Phenol, a mildly acidic toxic white crystalline solid, obtained from coal tar and used in chemical manufacture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenol). Naphthalene, a volatile white crystalline compound, produced by the distillation of coal tar, used in mothballs and as a raw material for chemical manufacture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naphthalene). Styrene, an unsaturated liquid hydrocarbon, obtained as a petroleum byproduct(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Styrene). 3. Energy saving light bulbs emit a lot of UV rays. Energy saving lamps emit UV-B and traces of UV-C radiation. It is generally recognised that UV-radiation is harmful for the skin (can lead to skin cancer) and the eyes. The radiation from these bulbs directly attacks the immune system, and furthermore damages the skin tissues enough to prevent the proper formation of vitamin D-3. GE Lighting 48415 60-Watt 825-Lumen General Purpose A19 Incandescent Light Bulb, Soft White, 48-Pack In conclusion, these bulbs are so toxic that we are not supposed to put them in the regular garbage. They are household hazardous waste. If you break one in a house, you are supposed to open all of your windows and doors, and evacuate the house for at least 15 minutes to minimize your exposure to the poisonous gas. Unfortunately, soon consumers wont have the option to buy incandescent lights because they wont be available. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) mandates the phase-out of incandescent light bulbs, and favors energy-efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. See more

Be sure to check the expiry dates on your "compact fluorescent light bulbs." All manufacturers recommend replacing them every 5 years, as the internal components are prone to expire and create a heating effect after expiry. The warning labels are included with all lamps.

Merry Christmas to family and friends

Had a service call this week; regarding a "sizzling" sound coming from a range hood exhaust fan. Upon arrival, I found a "energy saver light bulb" installed. These fans typically have a hi/low setting. However; energy saving bulbs arent able to be "dimmed" or put on a "low" setting. This definitely creates a fire hazard. Please use regular incandescent bulbs for anything that you may want to dim.

Hot tubs are the most pleasureable to relax in, this time of year. How many people know what to do when the tub suddenly stops running? This might happen at night, or when a service person is unavailable. Risk of the tub freezing, and the lines cracking are genuine concerns. A temporary safeguard is to take the "control side" of the tub off, and put in a trouble light (suitably named). Ive also recommended people to use a 1500 watt heater on it lowest setting- only if they are in a position to monitor it. Replace the side of the tub. This will create enough heat to keep the tub from freezing, until it can be repaired.

Daylight savings time again! This is the time where I like to remind my friends and clients about changing out their smoke detector batteries. If you currently dont have a smoke detector located on "every floor" in your home, consider having electric detectors with battery back-up installed (for power outage protection). Also the detector located outside the bedrooms, should be a smoke/carbon monoxide combination detector. These early warning units DO SAVE LIVES, as been shown on news reports of families being saved by having these units properly located and installed. Misfortunes can be prevented by proper planing.

Intermatic Timer

Absolute Electric 19.03.2020

Hydro costs arent getting any cheaper, and in fact Chatham-kent recently released a notice of a 40% increase. People are always looking for ways to minimize some of these expenses. One way I could recommend lowering some of these expenses would be to install a timer on new or existing electrical items, such as pool pumps and heaters, ponds, yard lights, exterior house or shop lighting, and not limited to christmas lighting. If the timer is set to correspond to operate in the "off-peak" (7p.m-7a.m.) times, you would essentially be paying half of what you would pay during "peak-demand" time. if you are looking for a timer, consider a double throw intermatic timer (as per picture), as it is capable of operating more components, and is manufactured to last longer than their cheaper counterparts.

If you have an outside yard light, currently not working, dont assume it is the photo cell (dusk to dawn sensor) that"s gone bad. The photo cell operates reverse to what one would think. When it fails, it fails in the closed condition, leaving your light "on" all the time. It could be something as simple as a poor socket to lamp contact, or an expired bulb.

Be sure to note the purchase date on your energy saving florescent "spiral type" lamps. Most manufacures will recommend a 5 year replacement date. It is good practice to replace them every 3 years. They are known to catch fire near the end of their expiry date. Dont wait until they "burn out" :)

Absolute Electric 13.02.2020

The use of extension cords for permanent wiring applications is a dangerous practice. The gauge of copper wire used in the extension cords, is a lesser gauge, than that used in standard household wiring. Note: It is particularily dangerous to use these corrds for Air Conditioners, Microwaves, and Refrigerators. An adverse heating effect is created, thereby creating a fire hazard. Consider having an permanent outlets installed, and indeed placing all "heavy draw" items on their own dedicated circuit.
