"Leading pediatric experts say masks, cohorting and physical distancing are not needed this fall in schools in areas where the COVID-19 risk is low, and that sports, music and extracurriculars should resume." They also want high schools to jettison the octomesters and quadmesters - and return to regular scheduling models. Additionally, they are adamant that schools should not be shut down again unless something truly extraordinary happens.... https://www.thestar.com//ontario-schools-should-plan-for-f
"The biggest bang for your buck is tutoring" when it comes to accelerating student learning and recovering from COVID learning loss, education experts say. "Research suggests that intensive tutoring is one of the most effective ways for kids to catch up on learning. A Harvard study from 2016 sorted through almost 200 well-designed experiments in improving education, and found that frequent one-to-one tutoring with research-proven instruction was especially effective . . . B...ut less frequent tutoring, such as having sessions once a week, was not. A 2020 review of nearly 100 tutoring programs found that intensive tutoring was particularly helpful in reading during the early elementary years, and most effective in math for slightly older children. And another study found that intensive tutoring had major positive impacts on math gains among high school students." https://hechingerreport.org/how-one-district-went-all-in-o/
We've preached for years the power of handwriting to enhance students' info retention and learning outcomes - and more studies keep pouring in to confirm handwriting's potency: "Taking notes with a plain old pen and paper is becoming more antiquated by the day. However, a new study finds handwriting is actually the superior learning option, beating out both typing and watching videos when it comes to quickly picking up new information. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University report that handwriting is 'surprisingly faster and significantly better' for learning certain skills." https://www.studyfinds.org/handwriting-faster-learning/
Lecce eager to get Ontario students back into the classroom in September... What I’ve been focused on for the past weeks is getting children back into class full time this September, full stop. That is our priority, Lecce said Tuesday at a Richmond Hill school. We’re very pleased to see a high rate of vaccine uptake from so many young people in Ontario 12 up, and, of course, adults, the minister said.... We’ve set aside sufficient supply for the second doses in August, (and) we think by increasing those numbers we’re going to have a more normal September, he said, conceding a very small number of families will choose to have their kids continue to learn online. So our intention and our commitment is to get every child in class in September. https://www.thestar.com//education-minister-confident-most
There is no such thing as an "average" student. Each student is unique. The challenge is therefore to create customized learning plans for each student, in combination with lots of 1-on-1 assistance - a very high standard to meet indeed - outside of the confines of a customized tutoring program. Brain imaging studies concur: "Early in his career, [Harvard Professor] Rose conducted brain imaging studies where a set of participants' brain scans would be averaged. He began to n...otice that each individual brain looked nothing like the 'average' brain. Rose concluded, 'There is absolutely no such thing as an average student. So we have a big problem, because we have built an entire education system assuming the average kid exists, that kids know the same things and learn the same way at the same age. They don't.'" https://www.freethink.com/shows/catalysts/education-system
