Johnny and Daniel are making a come back, where I have never left. TBT
From Mandeep who started with me at age eleven and who makes me laugh, and gives me much pride. Mona is doctorate candidate in neuropsychology and a media professional, this was all a few years back, and I'm confident that she has advanced so much more since. I hold her dear my heart. Thank you Mona for your kind and generous words. Best of luck in all. "Happy Birthday to this very special human who I am honored to call my Sensei but also my family. For those of you new aroun...d here (Hi!) I have been practicing and competing in martial arts from a young age and have had some amazing opportunities and reached some incredible milestones because of it. The martial arts is so much more than just self-defense. While I became physically tough sparring & competing with the best of the boys (infact winning a scholarship because of it! Yes girls are awesome!) I also gained unwavering mental strength, self discipline, gratitude, respect and patience along with a broken nose, bruised ribs and some other such souvenirs. I owe much of my success and who I am today to not just parents but the martial arts and the man in this picture...Sensei. Sensei was tough love but he was and is the first person to cheer you on, tell it like it is and believe in you. He pushed us past limits we hought existed; he taught us the concept of mind over body; he helped ingrain in us a type of confidence that allowed us to believe that everything and anything is possible. Most importantly he always led by example. I will never forget my Black Belt Grading. 3 hours of physical endurance. We were warned that the the first 20 mins would break us physically so how we get thru the rest of the grading would be a test of mind over body. Being an athlete the majority of the life I went in thinking 3 hrs no problem. I was wrong. 20 mins in I was done but my mind took over what it knew my body was capable of. The power of mind over body. The truest test. The foundation of all that we had learned over the years. Those 3 hrs have become a part of my life. Leaning into mind over body has helped me thru the toughest of times and I owe this to the Martial Arts and the man in this picture". Thank you Sensei for being you. Happy Birthday....you make 60 look 30! #sensei #martialarts #mindoverbody #karate #selfdefense #karatekid #blackbelt #health #dojo #instamood
Sixty looks good on me. Thank you to my Joey Coquitlam family.
To the students, family and friends of our dojo, I would like to begin by wishing you and your family the very best of 2021. It is my hope that you receive this email with you and your family in good health and in good spirits. We are continuing to closely monitor the current Covid-19 situation in the context of Public Health Orders. After careful consideration, it has been decided that our dojo will remain closed through to Monday, February 1, 2021. ... We will continue to update you on our status via email, but also check our social media pages on Facebook, Instagram, and our Website page. We are all making sacrifices to remain safe, and keeping the dojo closed is difficult choice, but it is something we must do. Placing the well-being of our instructors and students is my priority. I hope to see you soon, in the meantime, stay well, take care, and stay fit and active. Sincerely, Robbert Intveld Sensei Director/Chief Instructor The Academy of Martial Arts #113 - 12414 82nd Avenue Surrey BC V3W 3E9 Tel: 604-590-1080 [email protected] www.wcama.ca
Looking back four years ago, and through all that we are currently experiencing, nothing can take away our camaraderie, friendship, and our sense of family. We will come together soon, and I'll be here for you.
Monday's Memories from this day 2019. Happy 7th Birthday Emma! You got to be a Black Belt for the day.
Thank you all for the birthday greetings, it made for a wonderful day.
I was stuck in the crib for the first part of my life, and sixty years later, because of the order, I'm stuck in the crib again. It's a good thing that the year has 365 days for me to celebrate my birthday/year, because I'm going to milk this milestone for all It's worth. I hope to cross paths with you somewhere in my adventures. Here's to your health...Cheers!!
Missing, and thinking about all of our dojo's families and friends from Christmas past. May a beacon of Light cast hope for a bright Christmas to all.
Today's Update. All classes are temporarily suspended until further notice. We had our first class yesterday, and now we close again. We're walking on egg-shells...
With all sincerity
This photo of my wife Yan looking fatigued and defeated while snowshoeing a few years back could represent the struggles of 2020. Working full-time through an extended tax season while writing her finals, Covid, my dojo being closed for six months, and our daughter leaving for China, everything seemed uphill. She was buried deep emotionally and physically, and the challenges were real, but she never quit, head down, one foot in front of the other she moved forward occasionall...y looking up to see how far she has to go, persevering, and enduring the pain she was experiencing as she was completely exhausted from the hardship she was going through. The effort of every single she step took, at times, seemed futile. She made my problems seem so miniscule, for her obstacles were greater. Yet through all this, she still has time to be there for me, to emotionally support me (as I'm needy), to love me, to tell me what to do, and eventually, just the same as she finishes everything she starts, on this day of snowshoeing, Yan reached the top. It is difficult to watch someone you love struggle, but she's determined to do what needs to be done, and the trust we have in each other trumps all, I knew she could do this, as she can do almost anything she puts her mind to, I have faith in her I admire her, she inspires me, I love her very much, and together, as the photo represents, we are in a beautiful place. 2021 will be a cakewalk for us, and I hope it'll be the same for you. See more
On this day in 2014, twenty-five dojo black belts from various generations gathered to witness a high rank grading. It was a special day, as everyday in the dojo is.
Eight o'clock on a Saturday morning at the dojo, I can't think of a better place to be. Early workout, clean, and Krispy Kream.
Made some new signs for the dojo. Trying to lighten things up and keeping it fun.
We all need a little sparkle into our lives. Stay safe everyone
The impact, the love, and passion that my students have left on me is enormous and reflective. I will be forever grateful for having chosen the path that I'm on. We'll be back in 2021, as always and until then, remain safe. Thank you
Have a read, I think this is great T’was a Month Before Christmas 2020 T’was a month before Christmas,... And all through the town, People wore masks, That covered their frown. The frown had begun Way back in the Spring, When a global pandemic Changed everything. They called it corona, But unlike the beer, It didn’t bring good times, It didn’t bring cheer. Contagious and deadly, This virus spread fast, Like a wildfire that starts When fueled by gas. Airplanes were grounded, Travel was banned. Borders were closed Across air, sea and land. As the world entered lockdown To flatten the curve, The economy halted, And folks lost their verve. From March to July We rode the first wave, People stayed home, They tried to behave. When summer emerged The lockdown was lifted. But away from caution, Many folks drifted. Now it’s November And cases are spiking, Wave two has arrived, Much to our disliking. Frontline workers, Doctors and nurses, Try to save people, From riding in hearses. This virus is awful, This COVID-19. There isn’t a cure. There is no vaccine. It’s true that this year Has had sadness a plenty, We’ll never forget The year 2020. And just ‘round the corner - The holiday season, But why be merry? Is there even one reason? To decorate the house And put up the tree, When no one will see it, No-one but me. But outside my window The snow gently falls, And I think to myself, Let’s deck the halls! So, I gather the ribbon, The garland and bows, As I play those old carols, My happiness grows. Christmas ain’t cancelled And neither is hope. If we lean on each other, I know we can cope. They had their belts and certificates in a gift box left under the tree, they picked up their gifts tonight and this is the note they left me along with this photo: "Thank you Santa, like any kid at Christmas we opened the gifts early with excitement and then broke them in". I mean come on kids, Christmas is only in eleven more sleeps...you couldn't wait?
Be well and stay safe
Let's get Halloween rolling!
Well...we made it. Wishing you all a very happy 2021. May the new year bring us hope, and may your home be blessed with good health filled with joy and laughter...Happy New Year everyone!
Happy Thanksgiving from Sensei and our Sempai. We had a great three hour training session today burning off the weekend's indulgence. The Dojo is open for classes today and classes are running.
Happy Halloween! No horsing around here...
Please stay safe so that we can gather like we did last year. You are all missed, and we'll see you in 2021.
Looking back on this day 2011. The front row has our newest generation of black belts, the give away is the sweaty gi after enduring three hours. The second photo shows four generations of black belts in one family. All grown, all incredible, all high achievers.
Where's Sensei? The dojo is open for classes on Saturday October 31st. Wear what you wish, just no costume masks or weapons/hand held toys with your costume. Happy Halloween
Don't get dragged down and carry unnecessary weight into 2021, lighten up your load and make life a little easier for the new year ahead. Take only what you can carry.
For thirty three years, our dojo creates opportunities for our youth to grow and establish themselves, especially when it comes to developing and nurturing our future leaders. My young brown belt who has been with me since five years old leads the way by example with strong work ethics and good values. This kid is good, he's got the respect of many, he's fit, he's disciplined and is an excellent communicator, not bad for a thirteen year old. Where else would he be given this charge?
A Seasoned Group of Black Belts, and those that aspire and are inspired. Our Saturday at the Dojo.
Gift exchange with Grace. Grace was my youngest starting student at age two and a half (she was unique), and at nine years old she's still rocking it. We'll see each other again for classes in 2021. Until then, stay safe.
Christmas gifts waiting to be picked up at the dojo. It'll be a pleasant surprise for some of our students.
Happy Thanksgiving Weekend. Enjoy this time with those near and dear.
We came out feeling strong this morning. It was a good two hour training session testing our will.
Have a good day.
Flashback Friday, looking back on this day 2017
Last time our black belt Cynthia carried baby B in the dojo is when she was eight months pregnant, she now carries six month old B a little more comfortably. Good to have your energy back at the dojo, albeit solo on Sundays.
You are encouraged to go out and get your Free Flu Shot. You can book online at London Drugs or contact your family physician. Thank you for helping us all stay safe.
From another accomplished student since age six who is now completing his PHD in Sciences. Franklin is front row right. Thank you for your kind words. Dear Sensei, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and that the New Year will also be amazing! Wishing you and all your loved ones happiness and health. My work and studies have kept me very busy, but remembering the feeling of pushing through the toughest times of our training, and especially during the black belt grading, is ...something that will always keep me moving even through the most difficult of times. Thank youfor being an incredibly special and important person that has always pushed me, and many others, to greater heights! Sincerely, Franklin
The Dojo will be open and classes will be running as scheduled on Thanksgiving Saturday and Monday. Gobble up!
May the gifts of peace, health, hope, love and joy be yours. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
You can't stop believing
If Christmas is hard, If you’ve lost someone dear. Just look in your heart, And you’ll know they’re still here. ... The star in the sky, The light falling snow. The robin outside, It seems like they know. If this is a time, When you’re struggling through. Just do what you can, For what matters, is you. There’s no need to be merry, There’s no need to bright. Just do what you can, It will all be alright. (Borrowed with thanks)
Our version of physical distancing because we know it stings when we get too close. Happy Sunday and be well.
We are all experiencing the most challenging times, please keep safe and try to let others see you smiling through your eyes. Keep your chin up, we'll get through this together.
Congratulations!
It was a good night all around. The kids did well, and did what was expected from them.
Happy 76th Birthday Larry! You've been with the dojo since you were 69, and we look forward to seeing you and Kenny in 2021. Vaccinations first.
Young Evan at 12 years old. A broken arm? I still have my legs.
I hope that you read this message with you and your family all in good health and doing well. You may have heard the Ministry of Health and Dr. Bonnie Henry have updated their order regarding fitness programs for youth under nineteen, in other words we can relaunch our children’s karate program and reopen our dojo. Having said that, with cases still rising in our community and with Christmas break approaching, I think it would be best to resume classes the second week of Janu...ary 2021. It is important for all of us to be at the dojo, both students and instructors, but we all need to pause and make an effort to flatten the curve. We will keep you posted on any changes via email, and by our social media platforms, and on our AMA webpage. Fyi: We will keep our Christmas tree in our dojo until February to keep the spirits bright. As we are navigating through difficult times, my wish for you is for your home to be blessed with good health and good spirits this Christmas season. Take care and we will see you in 2021.
Friday Flashback to 1983/84. This is where it all started and I haven't stopped since. With my first instructor to Shodan, Sensei Frank Clayton
TBT. Recognizing a family of high achievers and thanking them for years of selfless contribution to our dojo. Romina achieved her black belt in 2009, Elisha in 2011, Caroline in 2017 and Charlotte 2019. Their leadership has had a positive influence on those they taught and trained with. I thank you and wish you continued success.
Missing our kids
We acknowledge that Christmas will be different this year and yes, we are all experiencing the most challenging times, but let's all try and keep the spirit alive.Take care, and be safe everyone.
Even though the dojo is still closed due to the PHO, it's nice that one of Santa's elves was able to sneak in to drop off an early Christmas gift. You're making a believer out of me.
This year more than ever.

Sending you a little ray of sunshine. Stay safe
Let's work together to flatten the curve one more time.
My instructors have a natural abundance of energy, it's just sometimes we have to help them take this to the next level. Saturday's treat for my team as they are an incredible bunch of leaders.
And we continue to grow. Thank you for being an active part of our dojo.
