The cost of an artificial limb is a heavy financial burden for most families, especially considering that child amputees outgrow their limbs as regularly as the...y outgrow clothing. This is well illustrated by Kelly-Ann, now 5 years old, who is standing beside every prosthetic leg she has been fitted with, including her very first, which she is holding. The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program assists with the costs of standard or everyday artificial limbs and ongoing adjustments and repairs by paying the portion not covered by provincial or private medical plans, or group insurance. The program also covers 100 per cent of the cost of recreational limbs and devices, such as those designed for swimming, biking or playing a musical instrument. Thank you to Michael Laughlin, Canada's first above-knee amputee firefighter. Michael is a very busy and active person in the gym and with sports. He also chas...es around his 9 month old son, Lincoln. Michael says "I just want to say that without the Ottobock X3, I would not be able to perform my duties as a full time firefighter with Kingston Fire Rescue. The X3 has not only allowed me to get back to work, but has given me the freedom to do almost everything I did pre-amputation." Thank you, Michael for all that you do for your community!

On the 4th day of Veteran's Week, we're shining the spotlight on Corporal Sebastian Gallegos. In 2010, Sebastian was deployed to Afghanistan after his training.... When walking on patrol, he stepped in a water-filled ditch where he heard an explosion and then passed out. He had stepped on an IED, and when he awoke, he arm was no longer attached to his body. Sebastian is now getting to do the things he loves to do, such as working out and kayaking. Thank you for all of your dedication and bravery, Corporal Sebastian Gallegos!
